Tuesday the 24th Fund Raise Drive

Although, I already have my (hmm, hmm) halo for contributing, I want to take part in the special fund drive Nanowrimo is doing on Tuesday the 24th. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see the breaking news on the front page of the Nano website. I'm sure Chris's song will be fun but that isn't why I'll contribute again. I'd love to see them develop a year long version of Nano. I don't know any of you, but I look forward to your posts--- to hear you crow or cry--- and to know I'm not alone in my love-hate relationship to my writing. Oh yeah, I'm greatly pleased with a little of it, and so-so about a lot of it, and embarrassed by some of it. There are no trite truth's but my writing contains both trite and truth. Does that make me a writer? No---not yet. But I'm more of a writer, more skilled, and more relaxed with the process than I was four years in my first Nano. Do I want to write 50,000 every month. No, I do have a life (or at least some TV I want to watch) but I'd love to write 250- 500 words six days a week and have ya all to crow and commiserate with about the progress or lack there of. So...here is the challenge. My gift was small enough, I can give the same amount Tuesday. I know many of you won't be able but as a great region we can make a great effort and give a little more.
The TGIO Planning Thread

I know, it doesn't seem possible that we're talking about TGIO yet. But planning ahead can be a good thing!

I'd like to have a great event that plenty of us can attend. Win or lose, we all deserve a bit of celebration just for coming this far!

So, thoughts? Know a great location (even better if you work at one or are tight with the management and can get us some sweet arrangements!)? Here's the place to weigh in on the official Philadelphia Thank Goodness It's Over party!
Your Daily Kick-in-the-Pants

Hey Y'all,
So here we are on day one. It's here. It's Here. IT'S HERE!!! How are your characters holding up? Has one of them scheduled a vacation and forgot to notify you, the boss? Has a character called in sick, stepped out for cigarettes and not come back? Has a character strolled off the end of one page and found herself in the Amazon jungle with a spider on her left shoulder, a macaw overhead, speaking in the long, lost language of the Zanzow tribe and you, being unprepared for such a turn of events, forgot to pack your universal language converter--the Babel Fish?
Never fear. Such eventualities are bound to happen. Who hasn't suddenly found himself or herself surrounded by bandits in the Gobi Desert, when all you were looking for was gelato and other people crazy enough to sit down and write, in the course of one month, 50,000 words that are somehow related in some fashion?
Which brings me to your daily kick in the pants. Here it is WRITE ON! - which is not to be confused with the seventies expression 'Right on!" Just go with it. Sometimes, indeed, characters have a mind of their own and the worst thing you can do is stifle their creativity. Think about your own lives, for instance. Sometimes you simply have an intuition about some action you should take or not take. When someone asks you afterward about why you chose to act in such a manner, you don't really always have a logical or evidential reason you can put your finger on. Rather, you had a feeling, a hunch, a Magnum P.I. voice in the back of your head pushing you one way or the other. Maybe your sidekick character knows (even if you don't) that in four pages, if you continue along this course, you're going to find yourself in a room with no windows or doors or light.
No matter if you have meticulously outlined your story or are starting each day with the word you randomly chose from the dictionary (today's word is 'flourescent' or 'flour scent' if you want to write about cooking) or exist in the somewhere between, don't be afraid of the u-turn, the forgotten left at Albuquerque, the sun rising from the south. Just Write On!

Oh, and here's a little praise poem I wrote a couple of years ago when I was ML in Syracuse.

Praise Poem to the Nanowriter

Paragraph maker, paragraph maker,
breaks, breaks be to you.

May dictionary deities inspire your fingers,
grammar gods drown in your verbal volcanoes,
writing programs splay on the altar of your keyboard.

You the writer, righter of wrongs, wronger of rights.
You the system builder, world creator, prime mover.
You the seer, the knower, the chaos imbuer.

Praise to you flighting fancy,
pen clicker, paper toter,
between the lines scribbler.
May your ink keep pace always with your lines.

For you morning riser, before the children wake,
grail seeker. For you, character clamorings in the quiet
of curtain climber snores. For you, for you,
the first elevated cups of the day.

A toast to lunchtime huncher, sentences sandwiched
with sandwiches. You the earth mover and shaker,
clockwork grinder, breadmaker. The bewitched boss
to you, the lighter load, the clear commute.

You the 3am caroler, the singer by cathode flicker light,
by candle, by phosphorus. The renewing power of blinking
to you, the steam of tea, the thick of coffee, the 4am second wind.

Praise to you student stippler, piler of papers, compiler of knowledge.
You the keeper of classes, recorder of classics. For you the quiet corner,
postponed paper.

Praise to you the 50,000 word club, the scrappy scrawlers, the twilight quillers.
Praise to you in the midnights of your nights,
the noons of your days. May your insomnia provide solace,
your socks keep you warm. May your fingers flutter,
your mind compose, your computer behave.

Praise you writer. Praise to you.
The Matrix

I am watching the Matrix and I just heard one of my favorite lines: Trinity asks Morpheus "What's happening?"
Morpheus responds, "He's starting to believe."
Looking at my word count... so am I Morpheus, so am I!

If you're word count is nearing the big 50 aren't cha' starting to BELIEVE?

Keep writing everyone!
40,000 and counting

Wahoo, reached that magical 40,000 mark with plenty of time to go. I feel good about this, mostly because I've been disciplined enough to write every night. Should definitely hit the 50,000 mark sometime this weekend and then I plan on just going on until this novel is completed. I like how it's going and once it's done I can go back to edit. Probably will end up being between 80-100,000, maybe a little more. Shorter than my two 'Raven' novels, but probably average length for a novel.

So how is everybody else doing? I know some have already reached the 50,000 mark, that's awesome.

WAHOO - 50,000

Ah, finally, 50,057 words and 107 pages at this very moment. I'm toasting with a nice glass of red wine and may not be the last one tonight. I had set my original goal to reach the mark by the end of the third week and thus the deed itself has been accomplished. Hooray, hooray, heavy sigh expelled, and I'm pooped.

However, I'm actually happy for a few reasons. Number one, I had this idea for the novel I'm writing some time now, but needed to finish the second Raven novel which was released in October. Number two, the fact that my husband has been very ill this year, especially since the middle of June, had practically taken away most of my quality time to write. Now that he has been home for several months, it was a good time to start writing again, even though his condition remains a frustrating challenge at times for me and he most likely will only get worse. Number three, as a result of taking care of my husband and working a full time job, I wondered when I would be able to really write some good stuff any time soon. This Nanowrimo challenge has given me back my discipline and dedication to writing again. And I thank all of you for the support that we all give to each other.

I know ahead there will still be many obstacles to overcome, especially where hubby is concerned. But I had really gotten into a rut, being unable to really create anything that was worthwhile. Now I've crawled out of that deep abyss and have become a writing machine once again, even much more so than before. I've certainly proven to myself what I can accomplish if I set my mind to it and actually set aside the time needed to do something I totally love. This is my special time and nobody is taking it away from me again.

So my goal now that I've gotten this novel to beyond the 50,000 word count is to continue at this pace until the thirty days are up to see what my total word count will be in thirty days, then beyond until completion. This novel is totally different than the Raven series which is about werewolves and vampires running loose in Philadelphia. This one, however, is about an alien life form terrorizing Tucson, Arizona and I'm thrilled with how it's progressing.

I hold up my glass of wine to toast all of you who have been doing this challenge. It certainly is not easy, especially if you're not used to writing. So to all of you who have already eclipsed the 50,000 mark my huge congrats. And to ALL of you who will also pass that mark in the next week, you also have my deep admiration.

I also plan on going tomorrow from 11:00-1:00 to the Crossroads on Ridge Avenue in Roxborough. If you're free, stop on by and let's have coffee together and keep on writing.

Insert Primal Scream Here

I was working on my NaNo novel yesterday at lunchtime. I didn't upload it back to Google Docs, but I wasn't worried because I had saved it on my work computer. And now... it's gone! I can't figure out where it went. It's not in my Recent Documents folder. It's not in my Temporary files folder. It's just.. gone. GAH!!!!!

A whole day's worth of writing! And it was good and I liked where it was going. Now I have to recreate it... somehow and ... GAH!!!!!!

I am NOT pleased.

GAH!!!!!

Does anybody have a magic wand that lets you resurrect a draft from thin air?

Random images

Too bad I didn't see this when we were doing random object prompts. But the wonderful thing about writing is that any thing you see, hear, or even smell can end up prompting the next piece. So, in case you need an image to throw into your story, this is a true contemporary Philadelphia image. I live on Chestnut and on Sunday's play for a small church in South Philly. Only takes me about 20 minutes more to walk to the church than to work so most Sunday's I hoof it. Today down Chestnut was a race. I don't know what the cause. I don't usually play the 8:15 service but the pastor sent a text Saturday asking if I could. So I was on the street about 7:20 and saw most of the racers since I walk from 20th to 4th before I turn. There was one group of five people supporting somebody by the name of Meg. Two signs on the outside of the group with her name. And the three in the middle each held a pole with one letter on each pole, of course, M E G. But now, here is your image. As I got towards Independence Hall around the corner came a tall thin man whose balding hair was sparse and peppered. I believe he was in a white sweats (that didn't stand out so I don't remember) but around his waist was a pink tutu. As he rounded the corner some people cheered. I don't know if it was for him but he must have thought so for he thrust his hands in the air and gave a big thumb up to the on-lookers. So, I found myself wondering what the statement was and came up with several story ideas. Since I don't know the cause the image is open to exploration and many interpretations. I don't know if Harry will see a race for the cure with a guy in a pink tutu, but if I can't find a scene to take me across the finish line, that image is too good not to use somewhere. If you can use it, be my guest.
Write In - Roxborough section

So, I'm planning on being at either the Crossroads or Starbucks on Ridge Avenue Sunday around 11:00, I'll probably get there a little earlier. I prefer the Crossroads right on Ridge, it's easy to find and plenty of parking, if not on the street then a block up is a municipal parking lot. I'm open for suggestions at either place so anybody interested respond and we can decide which one. If I don't hear back from anybody then I'll be at the Crossroads this Sunday at by 11:00 a.m.

Hope everybody is doing great, finally cracked the 28,000 mark just a bit ago, sore lower back and all. Also, Roxborough is easily accessible to anybody in the area from the Main line to center city to Norristown. Not more than a fifteen-twenty minute ride and Ridge Avenue does have bus traffic though I'm not sure which one anymore.

Hope there will be some interest.

At the Crossroads

For anybody interest, I'll be at the Crossroads Coffee House, 6165 Ridge Avenue in Roxborough. Easy to find and plenty of parking. In fact, there is a free public lot a block up the street, but on Sundays parking is fairly easy on Ridge. I'll probably be there from 11:00 (or a little before) to about 1:00 (give or take). Even though I have reached the 50,000 mark, I am continuing this novel through the end of November and beyond. So if you're not doing anything Sunday morning then visit beautiful Roxborough and toast to our success with a great cup of coffee (and why not a pastry too). If there are some responses that you may be there then I'll try to make sure we get enough seats in the back. I also do believe that they'll probably have an indy singer performing somewhere around 12:00 or so. It's a very relaxed atmosphere.

How about that ?

So I have been thinking, since the start of nano I have never taken to the keyboard the way that I have thus far. Nor have I tolerated any whiny crap from my inner procrastination beast. I just have such a don't you even try it attitude with that beast.
I don't know where the story is coming from but when I read the nearly daily go get em' emails from my two best friends and my husband and son cheer me on EVERYDAY. I smile and say to the inner beast... How about that? I can do it.
25,000+ is Halfway There

I just hit 25,000 and am sharing my exuberance with others out there who may have read the 50,000+ posts with a sinking heart, thinking they were somehow behind. The way I see it, I am halfway done and I still have 12 WHOLE DAYS to get to 50,000. I am pacing myself, don't want to peak too soon! Hope this is encouraging to anyone else out there who is just reaching or near the halfway point. Cheers, Kathy
Having fun??

So is everybody having fun? I'm actually enjoying this because after I had finished my last novel, "Raven's Rage", I was sort of pooped out and with other personal problems at home with an ailing husband, wasn't feeling that I was disciplined enough to write everyday. This is making me do that and I'm thankful so I'm happy that I took up this challenge. Plus, it's giving me a chance to write something different other than my Raven series and that's always cool.

Currently I'm ahead of the game and hope to keep writing over the weekend to get comfortably ahead for those times when I just don't have it. But this is also proving one major thing to me. No matter how much I have going with work, my sick husband, and other crap, I can always find time to pound out at least four pages or so everyday. I needed the swift kick in the pants to figure that out because I can allow myself to get lazy at times.

Any tricks anybody can pass on, I'd be glad to have them. Oh, plus now that baseball is over and our Phillies lost, there is more time to write and the Eagles are on at 8:00 tomorrow night so plenty of time.

Novel Excerpts

Although I found this years novel synopsis a fun exercise, I also liked last years novel excerpts. I hope you'll all give a little taste of your novel and your writing. Here is mine.

"Harry! Where is she?" Neville was running to take his place by Harry side and Luna was coming from the opposite direction. Dennis broke free of his parents and soon Harry found himself surrounded by members of Dumbledore's Army and teachers.

"Stupid people! Get out of the way.”

"No!" Shouted Harry. She's after me my protection for you only worked against Voldemort

No one moved. Not Ron, not Hermione, not Dennis, not George, not Mr. or Mrs. Weasley, not even McLagan or Lavender. They formed a circle around Harry with their wands outstretched. McGonagle called to them, "take Harry to the castle. I will deal with this."

"You, Minerva? I think not. Sagitarri volare” Dozens of arrows appeared in the sky and headed towards the group.

“Protego” many said.

Then Harry heard Lavender screen, "Cormac! Cormac!" Harry looked and saw Cormac slipping to the ground. "He saved me. He saved me. He jumped in front of the arrow just before it reached me." Harry wondered why he didn't just yell ‘protego’ but remembered that he had never been a member of Dumbledore's Army. Perhaps he didn't know this spell though it was pretty basic. But Lavender clearly knew it! She had been a member of the DA. Then Harry realized who he was thinking about and decided she was probably looking at McLagan rather than watching what Umbridge was doing. No doubt by the time she saw the arrow and yelled she was too frightened to remember this spell. McLagan gallent (but completely like a muggle) stepped in to bodily protect her. Well at least he took it in the shoulder and not the heart.

"Oh, Courmey, you're my hero.”

Harry heard Ron's snort. Then he heard Hermione, "don't laugh, Wan, Wan.” Harry didn't have to see Ron to know his ears were turning pink. Hermione had just reminded him of what Lavender had called him when they were dating. Well, maybe dating was the wrong word. When they were having their snog decathlons.

----------

Midpoint Blues and Bliss

It is 1 am and I have just crossed the 25,000 mark. Yippee, I can start going down the slide and hit that beautiful 50k sand pile waiting to catch me. Then again, I'm in that dreaded middle section. I still don't have clear what pieces of the puzzle my characters need to find in the second act because I'm still not clear what the game is. So I'm excited and fearful at the same time. Although the first 25,000 words contain lots of crap...there are parts that I really am pleased with (or could be after a re-write). Since my goal is to write a complete story where all the scenes lead to the conclusion I don't want to just word dump. I haven't used many of the worksheets out of the Victoria Schmidt's "Book in a Month" but some of them have really helped. Stopping writing and filling out some of the sheets have helped me get some story focus so I could go back to writing. But I've decided if I can't make the next logical step I will just keep writing scenes. It helps to keep telling myself, "this is a rough draft. Doesn't matter how many inconsistencies in story...sorting that out and choosing the threads to go with iis December's task." So, ya all,,,how's it going for you? We talking in this thread, story wise, emotion wise, and of course, word count. It's NANO!
Roxborough/Manayunk area

So I live in Roxborough and was wondering if there happens to be anybody who also lives in the area possibly wanting to get together for coffee, discussion, and comradarie? There's a nice coffee shop on Ridge Avenue, 'The Crossroads' , that has a nice amount of tables in the back, plus they have some on the second floor. There is also a Starbucks a few blocks down on Ridge, though I'm not sure how conducive it is for a small group to get together. I'm free most evenings and weekends. Would love to meet up with some fellow writers. I've actually been thinking/hoping that I could get a group together for regular gatherings. It would also be a great place for like an open mic event because they do have musical groups scheduled there as well. There is also the Blinkin Lincoln a block down from Crossroads that is bigger and other potable libations are available.

Need some encouragement

OK so here's what happened. I told the editor of iProng magazine (a friend of mine) that I'd do an author interview for him, but before I could tell him I would do it IN DECEMBER, my friend emails the author and tells him I'd be setting up the interview.

So the first week of NANO was derailed for me. I transcribed 15 pages of an hour's podcast, just to get a 1500 word interview out of it. (If you want to see the interview, it's in a free pdf download here: http://www.iprong.com/iprong-magazine/iprongmagazine111009/). It took me DAYS. hours and hours. And guess what? I didn't even get PAID for this one! RRG.

So I have about 3,000 words so far. That means I need to write 2350/day to win this thing. I don't know if I can do it. I want to make Philly proud and help us all to get to that 50K, so if you could please kindly put some words of encouragement here for me and everybody else in our beloved Delaware Valley, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks, all! Hope to see you soon. (Are there any mainline write ins tonight?)

-Christine
