Now confirmed: The TGIO party will be Saturday 5th December at Blake's in Downcity Providence. (This is partly for all those who couldn't make the Midterm that was on a Sunday.

Here's the GMaps info. Put in your own address to get directions. (We can't promise anything about parking. It all depends on what's going on at Lupo's, the Dunk, and other nearby venues. Sometimes it's tough on Saturdays, sometimes not. There are some paid garages and lots nearby.) If you're busing, it's just a few blocks from the (newly repaved!) Kennedy Plaza.

Blake's is all ages, and has excellent food and drink. Prices are very reasonable. We're in the 66 Room; just wander in, or ask for Rhode Island Wrimos.

We're there 5-8, but it's okay to show up a bit early if you need to, and they'll probably let us dally longer if we want to. (Nothing else is booked that night, so far.)

If you can, please RSVP at the event Facebook page; otherwise, please drop a note here. RSVP or not, no one will be turned away. Bring friends or family if you like, too.

Northern RI meetings

Would anyone else be interested in having some unofficial write-ins here in the Northern RI area? I'm thinking mostly of those of us in Burrillville, Glocester, N. Smithfield, Smithfield, and Lincoln. Providence isn't really that far, but when gas is an issue it can make a big difference to go somewhere twenty minutes closer. Last year a couple of the proposed locations were the Starbucks in Lincoln and the Panera Bread in Smithfield. We ended up meeting a few times at the Panera, and also having a last-day writing session at Brewed Awakenings in Johnston.

As for locations this year, I still think Smithfield or Lincoln are good bets. Woonsocket could work too, but I don't know it well enough to recommend anywhere specific. If anyone knows a good location in Northern RI, let us know! As much as I'm partial to independently-run coffee shops, we have a shortage of them in this area of the state. And I gotta admit, Panera's free refills on hot coffee and iced tea did a lot for some of us last year. If we can't come up with something better, I'm proposing Panera again.

For meeting times, Sunday afternoons or evenings as well as Monday or Friday evenings are best for me. I can do other nights (or afternoons, but I'm assuming a good chunk of people work then), though they're not ideal. On Saturday afternoons I'm going to write-ins in Bellingham, which is marginally closer for me than Providence, but I can skip them if we have something definite going here.

How about any of you other Northern wRImos?

Write-In UPDATE - Tonight's Providence write-in MOVED

Reflections is closed tonight for some reason that's not explained too well. (It's not because of the holiday. The sign says something about required maintenance, and offers no reopen information.) SO..

Tonight's Providence write-in has been MOVED to Cafe Zog down the street at 239 Wickenden.

Sorry for the very late notice, we didn't know about Reflections closing until we got there!

This is my first year doing this, and I'm super-excited and would love to meet some other local NaNos. There are tons of little coffee shops scattered along Aquidneck Island, in Tiverton (where I live), and in Bristol.

MIDTERM MEETUP - this Sunday!

I know, I know, several people begged for Saturday, and can't make Sunday. Well, to be honest, it was going to be the same either way. Between public and private replies, requests for each were about even. Blake's ended up deciding it anyway, because they were booked solid except for Sunday. (We'll try to do the TGIO on a Saturday to make up for it!)

WHERE: Blake's Tavern, Downcity Providence (122 Washington St., corner w/ Mathewson)
- We have a private room (most .likely the Library room); ask for "Rhode Island Wrimos"

DATE: Sunday 15th

TIME: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., come or go as you please; also, they'll usually let us dally if we want to stay a little later.

Despite the name this is ALL AGES, as all of our official local events are.

You don't need to RSVP, but it's appreciated if you can. Ideally at our Facebook event page, or just drop a note in this thread.

There is no catering for this event. Order whatever you want from the menu, but please buy something, as they're letting us have the room at no charge.

This is also not a write-in, but write if you want. There is some power, and they've confirmed that they do have wi-fi.

WHAT: Mostly, this is a much-needed break in the middle of the madness, where we trade stories good and bad, tips and tricks, and discuss how it's going. If you want to share something, bring it. If you've got questions, bring those. Most of all, bring yourself! Which reminds me: Yes, by all means, bring anyone along you want. This is a casual mixer.

Major events (Midterm and TGIO) planning -- want your input!

The Kickoff was quite amazement, with nearly two dozen people! It's the largest meetup we've had, ever. It also strongly suggests that at least for these major events, we may have outgrown Reflections' reasonable capacity. (They'll never tell us to leave, but that kind of crunching may not be conducive to our needs at such large events.)

In the past, we've had some major meetups at Blake's Tavern in downtown Providence. (122 Washington St., corner with Mathewson -- close to Lupo's). They have back rooms which we can reserve. (We'd get the larger one at this point, the Library Room, which has a book motif.) There is some power, and they have wifi.

Let me say right now that it's assumed that all guests will order something. (Take a look at the menu.) Though Blake's has a bar, it is a full tavern, and this IS all ages.

I spoke with them today. We can book for Sunday 15th, for the Midterm. What do you think? What time would you like? (Or would you prefer Saturday 14th? I neglected to ask them this, as I was on a train at the time and didn't have a calendar in front of me. So I can't promise that that date's available.)

Since this November ends on a Monday, the TGIO should probably be no sooner than the following weekend, the first weekend in December. They're booked that Friday and Saturday, but available Sunday 6th. So the same questions apply, and we may need to book this soon or risk losing it.

I'll want to have some answers for them soon, so please give us your feedback right away. Thanks!

Anyone else have a hard time this first weekend of NaNo?

Could the weather be any nicer in RI? All I could hear, as I tried to work on my novel, were the neighbor's working on their yards. I looked outside and saw the leaves piled high, waiting for someone (me) to bag them and haul them away. Oh well, I was able to squeeze a few more pages out even with the beautiful weather. And there is always next week.

I did score my first "You cant write all the time. Life does go on." from my wife. I guess I am doing something right! :P

RISD/Brown?

I was curious about students at RISD or Brown. I'm at RISD, but I live at home in Fall River. I thought it might be cool if there were any others from the two schools we could have a write-in on one of our campuses. Since our schools are so close and generally, a Brown student can get in to RISD buildings pretty easy, I don't now how it works on the Brown campus, though... But, anyway... If anyone's interested I'd be glad to try and organize something... Maybe at Carr Haus?

Couple of places come to mind: Panera (any or all 3 of them on RTE 2), B+N on RTE 2, Borders in Cranston.

Since Providence for the moment has Saturdays, how bout Sundays for Warwick/Cranston/East Greenwich?

Mid-Week Cranston Write-In

Hi all! I'll be hosting a wee write-in at the Panera on Reservoir Ave Wednesday at 7:00PM (for folks who can't or don't want to head to Providence for the one at Reflections). Of course, you can get there earlier but that's the earliest I can get there. They usually kick us out around 9:30 PM or so. Remember, coffee refills are (or at least used to be) free :-)

For the rest of the month, I am going to try to host this one on Fridays (but let me know which work better for people in the area).

I'll have some kind of useful sign on the table so you can identify me.

Rhode Island Kick Off, November 1st...

Hiya everybody!

With Sapphie going to be great white north for the kick off, I'll be standing in for the Kick Off on November 1st.

The Google Calendar and our Facebook page has been updated to reflect Write Ins for November.

Location of the Kick Off is going to be Reflection's Cafe over on 468 Wickenden St Providence, RI 02903-4429 from 5pm until we get sick of each other.

Stickers, name book and surge protector will be provided.

Death by Postcard Deluge

The ML for Nashville has issued a challenge to all Wrimos everywhere, so I'm sharing this with you all:

I collect postcards because I think it's cool to see other places.
And I've been thinking of an idea that's postcard centered, and then this kinda came to me.

Here's what I want.
On the back of the postcard, instead of a note to me, I want a small character profile.
Character Name:
Age:
And a couple small traits.

Bascially, I want to know *who* would send this postcard.

The post card *HAS* to be a location. None of the crap that shows a hillbilly and says Alabama in the corner.
A town, a landscape, a museum, etc is perfectly fine. :)
Basically, the postcard has to show SOMEWHERE so I can write about it.

So I already said I would write more words than I had miles on my car (which is already 66k and I'm sure will be more like 70 by the end of NaNo)... This is how your region gets to screw me.. In addition to my 66k and counting, I will write 500 words about each postcard I get.

Yeah, so if I get 100 postcards.....

I'm totally up for this, and I want you guys to get the word out to all your NaNo people.
This is especially good for NaNo regions where I have dropped, thrown, or flung gauntlets. Go ahead, try to overwhelm me. I dare you.
