***TGIO INFO***

Here we go! The Official TGIO Info:

Saturday, December 1st, from 2:00-5:00
"West of 360" TGIO
Ol' South Pancake House
1509 South Unviversity Drive
Ft. Worth, Tx 76107
817-336-0311

Sunday, December 2nd, from 2:00-5:00
"East of 360" TGIO
Two Rows Restaurant (Greenville)
5500 Greenville Ave, ste. 1300
Dallas, Tx 75206
214-696-8670

Please bring an excerpt of your novel if you would like to share some of your 50,000 words of genius with us. Also, kandigurl made an awesome suggestion: bring several copies of your except, signed by the illustrious author, of course, and we can trade excerpts (like trading cards). This way we can share a little piece of everyone's NaNo for the month...

(I was thinking of printing my excerpt in landscape and making two columns both with the same text. if you make your margins very narrow and print in small print, you can fit the same amount of text as you would in one full-size sheet of paper, but now you have two, like flyers. Saves on paper... I don't know how many people are planning on attending; I think for the Kick-Off Dallas had close to 10 and FW had close to 20, but since we've switched the days, and people have joined since Nov. 1st, we may have higher attendance at the TGIOs)

Hope you can join us!
***The Fat Lady Ain't Sung YET! Write-Ins***

Hello!

As we get down to the last few hours of November, some of us are going to need all the help we can get! To offer that help, how about some late-night write-ins on the 29th?

If you would like to schedule one of these in your area, please feel free. The less people have to drive, the better! Some of you might want to actually pull an all-nighter, so locations such as IHOP, Denny's and Whataburger would be great; if you know of someplace cooler that stays open all night or late into the night, then suggest it!

(BWW write-in has been moved, see post below. You are still very welcome to go to BWW, though!)

If you're hosting your own late-night Fat Lady write-in, post info here!!!

(I know a lot of you already have regular Thursday night write-ins... I'm not trying to impose or steal your thunder - perhaps you can ask those locations to stay open later just for you! Hey, if you don't ask, you'll never know, and if you promise to purchase enough caffeine, they might let you. If not, and you need some more words after 9:00 or 10:00, please join us at a late-night location!)

:) Criss.
***WRITE-INS***

Please post write-in announcements and other info here (date, time, place - address with city and zip, please, for those of us Mapquesting it).

Please limit your posting to this thread to write-in announcements ONLY, so we can keep it easy to read. If you have a question or comment about the write-in (time, location, who will be there, how much you love the place and how excited you are that someone thought of hosting a write-in there), please private-message the host/poster directly.

(As soon as we have ML powers, we will "sticky" this thread so it's easy to find.)

Happy writing, fellow Wrimos!!!

***Thank Goodness It's Over Party planning stuff***

Hello!

I guess we should get on with planning the TGIO. For those of you new-ish to NaNo, the TGIO is a big get-together held after November is over, where you get to meet your fellow Wrimos when they're not furiously typing away at their laptops or AlphaSmarts or scribbling away in their notebooks. Those bold enough to do so bring excerpts of their novels to share with the group.

The TGIO (like the Kick-Off) is supposed to be one big event everyone in the region attends; at the write-ins you ahve usually been interacting with the people in your immediate area; this is a chance to meet the rest of the faces.

In the past (at least the years I've been involved), all of Dallas/Ft. Worth has met at one huge Kick-Off and one huge TGIO, but this year we decided to have two Kick-Off, one for the Dallas side ("east of 360") and one for the Ft. Worth side ("west of 360"), so people wouldn't have to drive so far. However, I think this caused some confusion, because several people were trying to organize their own, individual Kick-Offs all over suburbs of the DFW Metroplex.

Would you all prefer two TGIOs, probably at the same locations of the Kick-Offs, or one big TGIO somewhere in the middle?

Keep next weekend, December 1st and 2nd, open - the TGIO(s) will probably be Sat/Sun (one or both) from 2-5.

Please post comments and suggestions here!

Thanks!

:) Criss.
***** DFW MLs ***** REGION CHANGE THREAD.

Dearest DFW Wrimos:

I wanted to formally introduce you to your new MLs.

REINACRISS you've already met - as of last night she's finally on the ML roster. She's energetic, talented, and genuinely nice, and you owe her many thanks for both kick-off parties. She'll be covering the Fort Wort part of things from here out.

SQUEE23 has stepped up and been rostered as the ML for Dallas. I'm sure she'll be great. She's cautioned me that she may not get to a lot of write-ins, but will be here on the forum offering encouragement and advice. She's also energetic, talented and genuinely nice. (Sense a trend?)

ALLYPAT isn't official yet, but will be your point person for mid-cities (AllyPat, Erin's expecting your email.)

There's a Waxahachie group that may be started (they're already a subset, but deserve their own ML, and it's being worked on. It's not official, so I'm not naming names.)

TIMETURNER isn't an official ML, but lets all thank her for stepping in to help out with the Dallas Kick-off.

I want to thank all of these women for all they've already done, and all they'll be doing. I'll be around the forums to help out if you need me, etc, and please, you're welcome to nanomail or email.

Finally, after speaking with Erin, we decided it's too late THIS YEAR to do any forum splitting, but this is my official question so that we can go into next year with everything set up:

Do you want to split the forum into Dallas, Fort Worth, Mid Cities, and Waxahachie?
Do you want some other split?

USE THIS THREAD to weigh in.

You've all been great. You all are great. Enjoy the next couple of days, and then let's kick butt with word count.

----------

AlphaSmart HELP!!!

I feel terribly silly asking this, but...

I finally bought an AlhpaSmart, and I LOVE it. BUT... I plugged in the USB cable to transfer to my laptop, and now I can't take the cable out! It's disconnected from the laptop, but the plug into the AlphaSmart is stuck.

I tried pulling, tugging, jiggling... my sister tried it... my husband tried it... and we can't take it out!

Is there some trick to this? (Some hidden release switch???) Do I just need to pull harder, fearlessly? Has anyone else had this problem? Should I contact AlphaSmart HQ??

Thanks!
East Texas is gearing up for NaNoWriMo

Ok. So Tyler/Longview isn't exactly in the Dallas-Ft Worth area, but we're not that far away. I participated in NaNoWriMo last year, reached my goal, finished my project, and got the certificate to show for it. This year I am encouraging as many people as possible in East Texas to participate. We'll be talking about NaNoWriMo at the East Texas Writers Association in Longview next Friday the 12th if anyone would like to share their experiences.

Hi there-
I was looking for fellow writers around Greenville or Rockwall. I live in a little town east of Greenville called Lone Oak. Most of the groups that meet are at least a 90 minute drive for me. I really want to get together with a writing group, but realistically need to find people who are closer.
I look forward to hearing from people from this area!
Arlington Coffee Haus Peoples!

For those of you who have been coming to Coffee Haus in Arlington every Thursday and Saturday, I NEEDS YO HALP.

As you are aware, the barista at Coffee Haus has had to put up with a lot of nonsense from us, and he has been quite a good sport. I would like to collect a big "group tip" from everyone to give to him on the last Thursday of the month, the 29th. I've been trying to tell people, but the idea kind of hit me Friday, after we had already met for our Thursday, and then not a whole lot of people showed up Saturday. And I really suck at nanomail names vs real names vs faces.

So! We are meeting this next Saturday, after Thanksgiving, at 4pm. If the musician is the same as yesterday, it really shouldn't be a problem for us to stay the whole night, but I'd like to get there early anyways. We are also going to meet on the 29th. Whichever you can come to, please bring a little bit extra for me to put in an envelope for Mr Bearded Coffee Man. The poor guy has put up with so much abuse, he deserves it.
***NaNo '08***Looking for a few good Area Liaisons***

We're going to try something different next year. DFW is a big area, and traffic has a tendency to wreak havoc on my word count. So, I have a plan...

I would love to be your Municipal Liaison next year, if you will have me, but I think the best way to serve the spread-out areas represented in this forum is for me to have minons -AHEM!- I mean "area liaisons."

What is an area liaison, you ask?

Let me tell you...

An Area Liaison is a very special person who volunteers to organize write-ins in his or her area. Many of you are already doing this... I've either been ot write-ins you've organized, or seen your name pop up repeatedly in the forums. You wouldn't be doing anything different than what you are doing now! Pick a time and a coffee shop, post your write-in, and voila! You're an AL!

I'd take care of the Kick-Off, the mid-month Write-A-Thon, and the TGIO. I figured the best way to handle these events is to alternate areas - say, have the Kick-Off in Ft. Worth, the Write-A-Thon in the MidCities, and the TGIO in Dallas, then switch locations the following year. That way the driving is equally spread out... or as equally as we can make it, at least...

So... feedback? Volunteers?

Denton NaNoers

Ok, so I'd posted this once before the new site and now it's gone but I want to make sure everyone knows, so here it is.

We are going to be doing a lot of stuff to support NaNoWriMo on the UNT campus in Denton this year.
We're having our kick off party November 1st at 5pm (yea, I know, you lose a whole day, but otherwise we're looking at Halloween!!)
We'll be having daily lunch-time write-ins and weekly evening write-ins Wednesday nights starting at 5pm
We are also planning a TGIO party on December 2nd.

Everyone is welcome to attend these events - whether you are affiliated with the university or not!

All activities will take place in the Cyber Cafe on the first floor of Willis Library - the cafe will be serving cookies, bagels, coffee, tea and soft drinks to fill your caffeine needs and the library is open until 2am on weeknights and midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Computer terminals are available if you would like to use one, otherwise laptops and other writing paraphernalia are more than welcome.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Easier or harder than in previous years?

Here's a question for those who have done NaNoWriMo multiple years. Did you find this year's NaNoWriMo to be easier or harder than in years past? What made it harder or easier for you?

For me, I found this years to be much easier. I tried throughout the month to keep my word count close, if not over, the daily goals so that I would be on track to win. But I think one of the biggest boosts for me came when I learned the power of the 15 minute clock. I found that my word count doubled or tripled when I was on the clock as opposed to when I would think/write/watch TV, etc. Knowing I was battling the clock for words allowed me to move things along faster, and still be able to take some breaks to relax my wrists and play those distracting games - and still be able to easily keep up with the word count.

I think, too, I went back to something I did in the first year, which was to encourage some of the people I know to help them reach their 50Ks. I took that idea and expanded on it, making an effort to reach out and give others encouragement. Every time I told them I'd see them at the finish line, I was not only encouraging them to get there, but for me to see them there, I had to get there myself.

I think, too, returning to some characters that I knew so well really made this fun, especially since it was a story trying to get out of me. I'm not saying I did anything wrong last year, but I didn't communicate with others as often, I didn't prepare as thoroughly, and I let myself go several days in a row without writing, which is what left me with such a monumental task to complete.

Still, I think this year was even easier for me than the first year I won because that first year, I was doing double duty. I was writing everything out by hand and then typing everything out later. If I remember correctly, I actually finished a few days ahead of time, but I was behind on the typing in, and just barely got it all typed up in time to verify my word count.

So I'm curious to know what helped and hindered others. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Grady
Far south Arlington/Mansfield?

I'm not sure I'm doing this right, so excuse me if this appears as a more or less duplicate post to another I thought I submitted...but hasn't shown up.

I'm in far south Arlington/Mansfield area and will be doing a lot of my writing this month at America's Best Coffee (ABC) in Mansfield, a great little coffee and sandwich place with free wireless, or at the new APL Southwest branch, which opened just in time!

Don't shoot me--I'm not following the rules. I'm using NaNoWriMo to write the second half of my current (women's friction) manuscript, so while I won't be able to claim an actual NaNoWriMo win, I'll certainly have a personal victory at the end of the month, because it will still be around 50K to finish. I thought about starting a new story, but want to break my famous "stuck in the middle" cycle and get this manuscript done. Didn't want to leave my characters floundering for another month or longer while I distracted myself with a new story.

At any rate, I think the momentum of being around other goal-oriented writers will be helpful. I also think it will be a good chance to find other writers in this area, as it seems like most of the groups in DFW are far north of me. I'd like to see a continuing community of writers created in the south Arlington/Mansfield area.

Give me a shout out if you're down here, and perhaps we can create some write-ins at ABC.
An earnest thankyou.

I very nearly actually (I've been writing all month, I'm too tired to care that I just used three adverbs in a row) had tears in my eyes this year as I read the winner's page. It has been three years since I last completed this challenge, and this year I finally crossed that finish line once again. The victory this year is somehow sweeter than it was three years ago. Three years ago, I was fourteen years old, and honestly did not have much in the way of such an endeavor - I set out to write, fell behind a little bit every now and then, caught up, then crossed the finish line with a wrapped-up story on the 30th. I faced little to no opposition, and when I was done my thoughts did not venture far beyond "Cool, I did it."

I think this year was my first real NaNo experience. I felt the entire range of emotions and experiences that I've read associated with this month we force to be one of the most bizarre months of the year. I felt the rush of excitement as I began and hammered out massive word counts at the beginning, and I felt the despair of falling behind and wondering if I could do it. I remember talking with my girlfriend and telling her how I felt honest-to-God disappointed in myself for falling as far behind as I was and thinking about quitting. The realization came to me that I had failed two years in a row to complete this task again. It would not have been a big deal to me, except that I knew that I could do it. When it's known that you have the capacity for something, and you fail anyway, you realize something about yourself - you're not trying hard enough. It wasn't that I was going to fail NaNoWrimo, it was that this showed me something about the drive within myself to finish something, and I was upset.

I very nearly quit again and resigned myself to failure for the third year running. It was the day of the Write-a-Thon at the IHOP in Irving, and I was debating with myself whether or not I should go. If I went, I would be saying that I still plan on finishing this thing, being only at 18,000 words at the moment, and that the rest of the month would be spent in a sprint to the end, come hell or high water. If I didn't go, I would be throwing in the towel and saying farewell to the concept of finishing this novel. I looked back at my novel and the idea seemed dumb to me and I had no idea where this was going or where I had ever intended it to go. I had all but given up and, believe it or not, Neil Gaiman's pep talk came and it seemed to be speaking directly to me. It was because of that e-mail that I decided to go to the write-a-thon, where I blew myself away by writing nearly 6500 words. It was that night that I had the realization that maybe, just maybe, I could do this thing.

I fell further behind later on, but I could never fall back into that state of despair I had earlier in the month, because I had written 6500 words in a night earlier. This last Monday, in a bizarre state of delusion, I decided that I was determined to write 23,000 words in that last week. I was using energy drinks from works, being completely exhausted during class but still writing every last word I could during the break periods in-between classes, and driving my roommates crazy with the light from my laptop illuminating the room well into the wee hours of the night. I can not explain the joy and the self-satisfaction I felt tonight as I realized that I was well able to finish, and crossed the 50,000 mark at 7:30 PM.

Beyond the joy of finishing a novel in a month, however, something else happened to me this month. Over the past few days, my brain has been working overtime. In issues about a drama team I lead, and just about all aspects of life, I've been thinking about deeper and more frequently and with more clarity than I can remember in a long time. I didn't connect it at first, and I just thought my brain had decided to go nuts for awhile because it was bored, but it hit me on Wednesday - it was not a spasm in my brain, it was not just "the way I was going that week," or any such trivial thing...there was a section of my brain that had been asleep for longer than I even know. In this past month, I have given life to the part of my brain that creates. Now that I'm using it again, I remember that I used to use this part of my brain - I used to look at life differently; I used to think about things more deeply than I think about them now; I used to see life through different eyes. Somewhere along the way, I let that part of me that isn't afraid to look at things and just play with them; to just think about them in different ways just for the sake of seeing what else pops up....I had let it fall asleep. This sounds like fantasy ramblings, I know; this sounds like the ending to some type of cheesy children's story that teaches us to believe in ourselves, but there are tears in my eyes right now, and I say this with complete conviction - my experience with NaNoWriMo this month has helped me see the world again in a way I had forgotten to let myself keep seeing it. I know that I'll be looking back on this month next week, next month, next year...for a very long time, as when who I know I can be, and my mind working the way I know it can work, began to surface once again. Whether or not the story I wrote this month goes anywhere, this story may be one of the most important stories of my life.

I want to thank everyone who was at the D/FW Write-A-Thon, but especially a few people.
I want to thank GradyP (I've probably forgotten most of your actual names, the night being one night of the month as it was, and your screen names being what I saw the rest of the time). You were fun to be at the table with and talk with, and your encouragement posts later in the month helped me out quite a bit.
I want to thank all the WriMos at the table next to me that I talked with as the night went on. I enjoyed our conversations very much, and I was talking with you like I talk with people I've known for a long time by the end of that night. You guys were a large part of my enjoying that atmosphere as much as I did, and the atmosphere of the place was what helped me put my nose to grindstone and pump out 6500 words that night.
Most of all though, Criss, I want to thank you. Thank you for organizing the Write-a-Thon, and thank you for undertaking the job of being the ML for this region. I know we didn't talk a whole lot, but you have an air around that just made me love being there because you were there. I've loved reading your posts, and I loved the encouragement you gave me toward the end of this. As your intro said in the ML region change thread, you are energetic, talented, and genuinely nice. You helped make this what it was for me, and I can't thank you enough.

Well, I thank everyone who had the patience to read through this.
See you guys on the bookshelves and in the headlines of the future.

So, with over 20,000 words to write by Friday, with a paper due on that same day, and an extra helping of work as two of our employees quit on us with no advance notice whatsoever (I think they were deliberately planning to quit the last week of NaNo to screw me over. I know they didn't know about NaNo, but still...what other explanation is there?) leaving us with seven employees operating two stores, I'm still planning on finishing. I've done 1600 today already and plan to write well into the night after this paper is done, which shouldn't take too awfully long since I have the outline finished.

And away I go!
Rockwall Heath and Seagovill

Hello Writers!
I live in Seagoville and teach at Heath High School. If you would like to meet in Heath to write, the Starbucks on Ridge Road is close. If you are in Kaufman County, I know that the Starbucks in Terrell off of Hwy80/20 across from The Tanger Mall gets free internet. I am very interested in developing my character and setting before November 1st.

Currently, I teach Reading to disabled readers, but I have found time to participate in NaNoWriMo for two years. Last year, I made the count by one minute, but I'm not sure if it completely loaded on time. With a colleague, we advise the Heath Writer's Club and I have been attending the Highlights Magazine Summer Workshops.

If you would like to join my, my email address is cnsdevine@yahoo.com.

Best Wishes!
Give til it hurts

I hope everyone has had a GREAT NaNoWriMo! Congratulations to everyone who hit 50,000. And super congratulations to everyone who kept writing, still writing even now, even if you aren't going to hit 50,000. The important part is that you wrote, write and keep writing!!!

Now, I'm going to overstep my bounds a little and challenge everyone who hasn't donated to NaNoWriMo to do so. I did the math, and based on word count & average words, in DFW we have 368 people who've updated their word counts at least once. As a region, we've donated $810. That's $2.20 per writer.

I know each one of you who wrote at a coffee house spent more than that this month at write-ins. Some of us spent WAY more.

Give $10 to NaNo, and forgo lattes for the next week. It's time we all weaned ourselves off the caffeine anyway. Don't even try to give blood right now. Your type is Columbian Supreme. :-)

Anyone who has enjoyed this month needs to give back to the crazy people who motivated you to do this. Anyone who has complained about the website needs to give twice as much. Anyone who has hated this month but has learned something about yourself needs to give. Anyone reading this needs to give.

I'm not a big fundraiser person, ask my kids for proof there. But NaNoWriMo has pushed me to a point where I feel like a writer, not just a person who calls herself a writer. And everyone else who has gotten something, anything, out of this month should give back, so this insanity can continue, improve and inspire more people to take pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
It's been a blast!

It's hard to believe, but another NaNo season is almost done. I just wanted to say that this year's NaNo has been a lot of fun for me. I'm glad I got to make at least a couple of the writing events this month and meet my fellow WriMos. Although I've been doing NaNo for 3 years, this is the first time I've gotten to go to an event because of scheduling issues. I'm glad I got to meet some of you at the Write-A-Thon at the IHOP on the 19th and see a few of you again at the IHOP a little while ago. I'm looking forward to next year, and maybe I'll be able to figure out a way to make the Welcome and TGIO parties!

ReinaCriss, from what I've seen, you've done a great job as an ML this year!

Can't wait to see everyone back here next October as we get ready to do this all again!

See you around the boards!

Anyone in East Texas Area? Longview?

Hi everyone! Newbie here with Nano. Been reading about all you wonderful Dallas folks getting together for write-ins. I'm jealous! I'm too far away. I joined the Dallas region for lack of one closer. Would love to see if there are any others closer to the Longview area. Shout out if you can!! Happy writing!
Need help!!!

So i wrote more than 2 wordcounts on the plane over here. that meant the wonderful excel thingy told me i would have 28000 words by the end of the month, or finish it by december 29. which is fine, i can deal with the pressure. on the way over to our hotel (which did not quite live up to it's publicity-sheet) i wrote another staggering 200 words. hubbie wouldn't allow more writing to be done during the anniversary celebrations, so didn't get to write more this entire weekend. now the entire Office package on my laptop has decided that enough is enough, and blocked all documents. which, in a way, i'm sure i can deal with allowing for some mayor effort, skipping of all TG family obligations (hurray!) and the ignoring of the fact that there are suddenly 2 kids that don't really belong to me wanting ti have a great fun TG break week. and the fact that the house is a pigsty.

so what i really need is someone to tell me that there *is* a reason for going through all this other than "fun" which i'm not really having this very moment. and that being at 14000 words is not a problem, even if you have to write the next 36000 on the back of napkins with a piece of burnt toothpick.
