Welcome Texas:: Elsewhere!

Here's the forum for everyone in Texas who is writing outside the established regions. It's a great place to hook up with other wrimos in your area. Just start a thread and see what happens!

I'm lazym, Municipal Liaison for Austin. I was strollin' around the Texas forums and noticed that there wasn't a post up here yet. Since the forum won't show up for you (in some circumstances) unless there is a post - I thought I'd take care of it.

Besides this forum, you're welcome to stop by the Austin forum - or any forum that's near - or far - from you.

Happy Noveling!

All NaNoWriters (13 and over) are welcome to join us this week at Austin-area write-ins and special events, including the day after Thanksgiving write-in brunch and pie party (and younger kids are welcome at the party).

Drop on by. We'll try to be on the lookout for wandering wrimos, but don't be afraid to say hi to your host. Here's where you will find us:

San Marcos Saturday Write-in!

Okay, to everyone who is willing and able to go to San Marcos on Saturday mornings, there will be a write-in... apparently hosted by me, somehow... at the Coffee Pot on Hopkins street. It will be held Saturday mornings at ten AM and will last officially until noon or so, but I'll probably be staying longer and anyone else is welcome to stay longer as well.

I spoke to the Coffee Pot and was told that they would ask us each to purchase something, which I agree with, out of politeness if nothing more.

To get to Coffee Pot, take 35 South and exit 205. Follow that street down past the restaurants, past the HEB, past the walgreens, down past the curve of the road, and on your second (I think) light, start looking to your right. It's next to the Taproom and Dillingers and across the street from something that looks like a courthouse or town hall. I'll be back to edit these directions to make them clearer once I actually drive the route and get details later today.

Er, is there something else that I, as host, should do other than supply a place and directions?
Quick question about Texas Gulf Coast

As a Kansan, I don't know much about Texas. In my story, however, I'd like some bad guys to bring a boat to shore in the Gulf Coast.

Realistically, how difficult would it be for someone to take a boat from Central or South America and land it somewhere on the Gulf Coast without dealing with the Coast Guard or other authority figures?

Any help/insight would be GREATLY appreciated!

Howdy, folks--Shepherdess here. Just wanted to let you know that we are hosting a kick-off donut fest as well as several other activities for local NaNoWriMo participants here at The Literary Lion bookstore. Donut fest is from 7am-10am November 1st; further get-togethers will be posted at that time.
I am not an ML, but we hosted a kaboodle of WriMo activities at the shop last year and had several writers spend many an hour here drinking bottomless cups of (free!) java and writing their brains out. I will also be participating as a writer this go-round. Anyway, if ya'll are interested in joining us, please shoot me an email (so I can buy enough donuts!).
One more thing: we are offering several other WriMo-Only perks; I'll have an announcement of all of that up on our website, www.belovedbookstore.com in our blog, "Letters from the Lion." Check it out if you are interested.

Creating your own write-ins

Hello, Elsewheres!

If you have a yen to meet up with other writers in your area, here are some thoughts on how you might proceed:

It's a good idea to discuss convenient times and places - but only for awhile - at some point someone has to take a deep breath and instigate! Get input, but don't stress about it. Pick a time and place that's convenient for you.

Scope out the venue ahead of time, if possible, to get a feel for how it might work with a bunch of writers.

Check with the venue to make sure they'll be happy to have you and aren't planning a big event at the same time (it's difficult to write with an open mic going on - I learned this the hard way!).

Tell people how they can recognize you - sticker on your laptop, table-top sign, carnation in your buttonhole, whatever.

BE ON TIME. In fact, be early. Grab a table in as obvious a spot as possible. If you have a friend with you, grab two tables - or bring a sweater to hang over a chair.

If you have a power strip and/or extension cord, bring it to boost electrical access.

Do not be upset if attendance is light. Just schedule another write-in if you want, and keep on keeping on.

During the write-in, if you can stand it, walk up to people who look like they are NaNoing. They may have missed your carnation and felt like they were there all alone.

Tip the servers/barristas well and be exceptionally nice to them.

You may want to figure out what kind of write-in you want, or ask the wrimos who show up. Some folks come primarily to socialize, some only to write, and many like a combination of the two. Ask (or be alert) so you can suggest a "quiet zone" if necessary. Some people like to have word wars at their write-ins - where everyone does a timed writing and then compares the results. I've never done this myself, but others swear by it.

However you do it, it will be great.

(I notice that I have access to your "regional" calendar. If you set up a write-in and can give me a few days notice - and you PROMISE to be there, I'll put your write-in on your calendar. Oh - and if your Elsewhere overlaps with a "where," please check with that area's ML so you don't schedule a write-in opposite something they've already planned.)

Hey, just wanted to say hi to any San Marcos natives that have signed up! Here's a poll for you guys... who's got the best coffee in town? The Coffee Pot, Tantra, M&J, or .... ? (P.S. Starbucks is not a valid answer, besides, it's way out by the mall)
