The Progress Thread

Use this thread to let us know how the writing is going!

After opening weekend, I am sad to report that I didn't stay up till midnight on the first night to get a head start, and I didn't write on Sunday. Not a great start, eh? I did still come up with an idea, so at least I have a topic, and I had a productive day on Saturday -- over 4400 words. So, I've pulled out from the dock.

How are people doing? Are your plots sailing smoothly? Have you hit rough waters already? Do you hate your plot and want to kill your characters off? Do you have a potential best-seller on your hands?

Post your progress here!
Potluck "It's Over!" Party -- Dec 3

Hi all!
My dear, supportive husband (who has given me lots of writing time this month!) and I would like to host a potluck dinner and "It's Over!" Party for Vermont NaNoers. We are in Fairfax, about 30 minutes north of Burlington, 20 from Essex, 45 from Waterbury and an hour from Montpelier.

We have two kids, a large dog, and a cat .... but plenty of room for whoever wants to show up! Bring your partner, kids, etc. and we'll have a great time.

Would Wednesday Dec 3 work for most? From about 6 pm to ?? Post your feedback - we're pretty flexible about the day. And email me for directions, either here or at nancyvolkers@gmail.com.

:)

Just found out that the Davis Center closes early next week, so I am thinking that Muddies might be better. Shall we? say, 7:00? or someone propose another better place?

since I seem to only be doing any writing at write ins, it's going to be crucial to me to have more of them.

Wed, November 19th : Burlington Area Write-In and Potluck Dinner

Hi,
Douglas and Jana would like to invite you all over AGAIN for writing this Wednesday.

Our write in last Monday was a superb success. We had around eight people and five PIES. For those of you who have not attended, here's how it works: It is a potluck where you bring something to share. We provide spaghetti, so colorful side dishes are a major bonus.

And, most importantly, some people bring PIE. You are not allowed to eat pie until after you have written 1000 words.

Food starts at 6:30pm.

RSVP by commenting here!

Let me know if you need instructions to my humble condo in Colchester.

Write hard,
TGIO

There's still over a week to go, but we should start talking about a much-awaited and eagerly anticipated event: Vermont's "Thank Goodness It's Over" party!

Last year, a bunch of people gathered at Three Tomatoes restaurant on Church Street in Burlington for a great dinner, a reading of a passage from several people's books, and a whole lot of thanking goodness the whole thing was over!

Do people have suggestions for this year? Dates that work and don't work? I'd love to see TGIO parties all over the state -- so that those that don't live in Burlington can also get together and pat each other on the back.

Two things: 1) The TGIO is not limited to those who hit 50K. PLEASE feel free to celebrate the end of our writing month regardless of whether you reached your goal. Hitting 50K is cool, but so is attempting such a colossal project. Celebrate a great effort this year, and get ready for a future success!

And 2) unfortunately, I am out of town on Dec 1 and 2. I hope some of the Burlington-area people will want to gather on Dec 3. If not, I understand. But... I'd love to be there!!!!
Twin State Word War -- Official Thread

It's war!

The third annual Word War between Vermont and New Hampshire rages again in 2008. Of the two states sharing the Connecticut River as a border, only one can claim the title of Twin State Word War Winner!

Here's how it works. Wrimos from Vermont and New Hampshire join Nanowrimo and attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days. When bored with their plots, the aforementioned Wrimos procrastinate by writing (good-natured) trash talk in the official Word War thread (that's this thread!).

On two dates, Kass, our official Word War counter will post the current counts in two categories:

-- Total Words
-- And Average Words per Wrimo

These two dates will be Nov 22 (to give us an idea of where we stand), and -- for the final counting -- Dec 1st. The current numbers look like this:

Total Words: New Hampshire 4,020,158 Vermont 2,516,715
Average Words Per Wrimo: New Hampshire: 16,891 Vermont 17,004

At the moment, the Word War is tied... NH has the upper hand in total words, but Vermont is ahead by a nose in the average category.

If I know the Wrimos of NH and VT, however, I know nobody can live with a tie. So there will be a TIE-BREAKING category. If the Word War is deadlocked on Dec 1 (like it is now), the tie-breaker will be Total Dollars Donated to Nanowrimo by Wrimos of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Currently, the donation count looks like this:

In United States dollars... New Hampshire $225 and Vermont $500.

Let the Word War (and the trash-talking) begin!!!!

I have a year's worth of back issues of Believer Magazine to give to somebody who wants to read them. I have October 2007 through September 2008 (9 issues), including the movie issue (with the very strange DVD) and the music issue (with the CD). They're taking up valuable shelf real estate but I refuse to recycle them. There's too much goodness to share in there.

I'd prefer to hand these over at a write-in or TGIO or something. But if we need to, we can make other arrangements. NaNoMail me if you want them. I'll post here (or delete this post) when they are taken.

Vermont WriMos AIM Ims

I think it'd be cool to share AIM screennames for those nights when you think you just can't continue writing. That way we can cheerlead for others when they need the support, and get support when we need it.

My screenname is powermongerer.

I'm online a lot and especially during NaNo.
Write in Saturday November 15 at Sapa Tea -- around 1pm

Here s Norm's description from last week:
Sapa is at 9 Center Street, the former location of the Burlington Army Navy Store. If you are not familiar with "off-Church Street" Burlington, other landmarks include the Daily Planet and Climb High sandwiching it, and you can see it across the street from City Market or Simon's (the gas station). It's new and we'd like to see it succeed, so let's support a local business. Also, they have free wifi.

It's a very relaxed and comfortable environ.
They have tea, coffee and yummy desserty things on offer.
I want to get in as much time as possible, so will try to be there by around 1pm. There are a few (2? 3?) outlets on the walls. I'll bring a power strip. Drop by!

I'm always interested to know what's going on BEFORE it happens, rather than catching the review after the fact. to that end, why not share something with the rest of us, if you think it sounds interesting and/or somewhat relevant to writing our novels?

Benningtonians Unite!

Calling all Benningtonians!

I'm a student at Bennington College, but there's also UVM near by. Not to mention an entire, awesome town full of people. I'm hoping to make it to some write-ins this time around! Is anyone interested in having a pre-nano session at South St. Cafe?

If there were ever a way for Bennington students and town-folks to unite, it's this! Break the rift through the joy of writing. (though by day 15 its not quite so joyful anymore, is it, vets?)

Anyway, just thought I'd pop in, and see who from Bennington is into this whole thing. I'm a huge fan of having a good write-in community, and I know there are some of you out there.
Burlington Area Write-In and Potluck Dinner

Hi,
Douglas and Jana Beagley are hosting a Write-In and Potluck dinner on Monday, Nov. 10th.

This is the fifth year for me, and I'm kinda misty-eyed about it. I was a bit late to the NaNo game this year, but I'm eager to reconnect and meet new people. And create another universe of words, of course.

SO,
If you remember going to a write-in party where there was pasta and pie at some condo in Colchester, that was us! Come and join us again!

When: Food starts at 6:30pm, please bring something to share. A hot dish or pie is encouraged.

Where: Beagley Condo in Colchester, VT, 12 minutes from Burlington. Post here if you need directions. Many of you probably still have my old directions in your inboxes. :-)

What: After eating spaghetti, there will be NO PIE UNTIL 1000 words! It is a surprisingly powerful motivator.

Wi-Fi: Will be available. For those who wish to be distracted.

Newbies welcome... just post here and I'll send you a private message with more details.

Obviously you may choose to ask Mark (larrypotter) if I'm a crazy weirdo first. He will assure you that I am, indeed, a crazy weirdo. But harmless. I'll be hitting the Davis center on the 12th either way, and you can decide for yourself then. :-)

Happy writing, everyone!
-Douglas + Jana

----------
