Dares, VerWrimo style

So I was commiserating with a friend and fellow Verwrimo of mine about how the dare threads won't open for me, which made me sad as I always enjoy reading through them and laughing (and, unfortunately, regularly losing The Game).

She came up with the brilliant idea of starting a smaller dare thread, just for us Vermonters. Apparently she was considering starting the thread herself, but seeing as she hasn't done so yet, I figured I could get away with lovingly stealing her idea and presenting it as my own.

So does anyone have any dares geared directly toward Vermont writers? Or any dares in general they feel like sharing?

I shall start:

Have two girls get in a catfight. Using hair straighteners as weapons.

((By the way I lost the game))
2006: Newsong- about 5,000- loser
2007: All the Forms of Love- 55,003- WINNER
2008: Orion's Huntress- Just over 50,000-WINNER
Vermont Tire Write-In?

So, I need to get my snows put on before Thanksgiving...and VT Tire in both locations has tables...sooo, it seems to me a perfect combination of tasks. I am shooting for getting tires on next Saturday or the one after and depending on who all thinks this idea would benefit them, too, I would be willing to get them on in either location.

To be clear, they do only have one table and people cannot just hang out if they are not, you know, getting tires. But, if you need your snows on too, reply to this thread and maybe we can make that unholy wait a little more pleasant for all involved!

Write-in at Phoenix books in Essex?

I stopped in there today and talked to someone about having a couple of write-ins there, I have to go by tomorrow and talk to the owner, but it looks good for a couple of Sunday write-ins. They don't have a lot of plugs, but we can bring a couple of power bars, and they have free wifi. The woman I talked to asked if we would be buying anything, and I told her of course beverages or snacks or something - we won't mooch on them LOL. Also, as an interesting, if he says it's ok, I might ask him to put it on their website and maybe we'll get a couple of new people too.

So, question - what times work best for people? Like 11-1? or 3-5? (Sundays)
Invitation from Chris Evans at WRUV in Burlington

***This is a message posted on our Facebook site from Chris Evans at WRUV, please reply to him directly or on Facebook, but not here, if you're interested***

Hi there:

I host a new show on WRUV-FM in Burlington that features Vermont writers. This is my first year in NaNoWriMo and I'd LOVE to do a segment on Vermont participants later this month.

If you think you'd like to be part of the show, which would take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, please let me know, either by messaging me directly or responding in this discussion thread. I'd like to get two or three participants to come on the show, read two or three pages of their work, and talk about the experience.

If you'd like to do this but can't make that time, please let me know that, too! I could always look to tape a segment in advance.

Thanks!
Chris Evans (aka, DJ Daddo on WRUV)
Dragonfly Cafe Write-In -Wednesday November 11 7:30-11:30am

Dragonfly Cafe welcomes NaNoWriMos!

I tried the space out today. I spoke with the owner and she was thrilled about my idea. The service staff is friendly and very welcoming and enthusiastic about us writers.

I set up a time for next Wednesday. They open at 7:00 am. I plan to be there at 7:30. I will bring a powerstrip. If you have one bring yours as well.

Every Wednesday they make fresh donuts so I thought that would be good incentive. They serve Green Mountain coffee. They have a breakfast, lunch and full service dinner menu. I attached my original post with other details including the location, hours, and contact info.

To prepare for a possible crowd if you would be so kind to RSVP in comments that would be great. That way I can set up more table space as needed. What can I say I worked for NECI and like to create a good event with good guest etiquette ;-)

Stay inspired!

~Kate

Since my *beloved* Mojo's has been closed I have been searching for a spot to escape to. This is my new love! Need fulfilled!

Lots of tables. WIFI. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Wednesdays they make fresh donuts. I tried the maple glaze. Just the right amount of crisp and the right amount of chewy. Soup, Hot and Cold Sandwiches.

I checked in with the folks to see if they would mind a small to large group descending upon them. Small 3-5 no need to call. IF it seems there is going to be a large group it would be polite to give them a head's up.

They have brunch Sunday and dinner each night so due to "full service" events they are not open for invasion at those times.

Here's the info:

Hours 7am to 9pm Monday- Saturday
Sunday 8am to 9pm

I plan to check it out with my laptop on Friday morning. I'll have Facebook open so friend me up if you haven't already. I'll post that I am there.

Feel free to check it out yourself.

South Street (again) meetup for Benningtonians and Benningtonites!

Hello all! This is Allie P. :)

I'd like to arrange a write-in at the South Street Cafe once again. Anyone interested in going?

Tomorrow, Sunday November 8th, 2-4!!!

Please, I'd love to meet some NaNo-ers... I don't know just yet how I'll make myself identifiable. I guess I can plan to wear my Moxie shirt. It's bright orange, and pretty noticeable, so it should be near impossible to miss (or ignore).

Anyone in? I got to Bennington College, but I'd love to meet some non-student types, too. or student-types of other nearby schools and things. Maybe I'll drag a couple of Bennington College people along as well, though, so I won't end up all alone... :o
Potluck and Write-In Party, Colchester, Saturday

Hi Vermonters,
I'm hosting a dinner and writing time party tomorrow night, Saturday, November 7th, at my condo in Colchester. Getting going around 5:30, going until whenever.

Obviously, you shouldn't go to STRANGE condos of people you have only met ON THE INTERNET. Seriously. That's just crazy.

But if you know me and remember me from a write-in, then you are invited. Please bring a pie or a salad or something mildly edible, your favorite writing joke, and your laptop.

We will feast, be mirthful, and then harness the power of peer pressure to write thousands of words.

No pie to be eaten until you have written 1000 words!

Cordially,

p.p.s.
Don't know me well enough to know my address? Send me a message! Introduce yourself! I'll hook you up. My memory of names is much, much worse than yours. I promise.

I'll be in South Street Cafe for a good few hours tomorrow (the 6th), probably from noon to evening. I'll have my black laptop and probably a dorky little sign saying 'NaNo,' if anyone feels like joining me. Feel free to stop in for a little, or a long time, or whatever, and we can benefit from the collective power of feverishly writing people!
Maine and New Hampshire Word War Challenge - CLOSED! GOOD LUCK, WARRIORS!

There's talk in the Maine forum about a statewide word war between Maine and Vermont. I had no hand in organizing this, so if anyone wants to step in with more information, please do; I am merely in both forums because Maine's my true home (I'm in Vermont for school, so I'm writing for this lovely state).

Now, Maine has about 200 people signed up more than Vermont does, so what say we show them what Vermonters are made of and beat them, regardless!

Everybody wins when regions compete!
Bennington Meet Up

Hey there, all those in the Bennington type area. A friend and I are planning to go to South Street Cafe tomorrow from around 3-5 (or until we can't write anymore) if anyone else wants to show up and have a NaNo party with us. We'll be the ones in a corner (probably with hot chocolate) and computers typing frantically. And my friend'll be wearing a NaNo shirt. I don't have one or I would too. :(
Discovered a great place that is open for Write-Ins - Dragonfly Cafe

This morning I noticed the sunlight shining in upon a building. I drive past this place once in awhile but never really noticed it until today. I saw the words DRAGONFLY CAFE.

Dragonfly Cafe
Colchester, VT 05446

Hours 7am to 9pm Monday- Saturday
Sunday 8am to 9pm

I plan to check it out with my laptop on Friday morning. I'll have Facebook open so friend me up if you haven't already. I'll post that I am there.

Feel free to check it out yourself.

See some of you perhaps on Friday morning <:-)

Folks,

I am not going to be continuing on this year. My novel, which was supposed to be some therapy for me being about a middle aged mother having to deal with the loss of her daughter toher own life, was turning into something that was 'digging up bones' and taking me emotional places I really don't need to go to.

So, I'm out. Best of luck!

Chittenden County Novelists!

Anyone interested in doing anything in the Chittenden county area? I think it'd be super awesome fun to do a write-in. Maybe I could finally get ahead on my word count; knock out a few good passages. If only I had motivation/support... (Any takers?)
Landmark College Write-In **CANCELED**

I'm sorry to do this to everyone, but the write-in has been canceled.

Because my college realized that they weren't sponsering the event, they cancelled it. Just found out this morning. So unfortuantely to all of you wanting to do the write in or thinking of coming, it unfortunately is off.

I'm very sorry to those of you who were going to come or wanted to come. My college decided to change it's mind at the last minute and I (as a lowly student) have no control over the administration.

I will try to work with someone to get the room (or a different room) for another day in November, or maybe a couple, but unfortunately I make no garantees, and it will be harder to do so as the month goes on.

I'm sorry about all this and I hope to get one that the college is behind going in the future.
Yay Write-Ins

Hey Everybody!

Thanks to all who came to the First Burlington Area Write-In at the Fletcher Free Library! Over the course of 3 hours we had a whopping 20 people show up and more than half of them were there from start to finish. Congrats to KevinMc who won our Ben & Jerry's prize for getting to 1000 words written at the write-in first!

So, Stregoica and I made the first write-in for the area we live in, and some of you out there are old salts and know that the write-ins are largely in your hands. There's already one we had no hand in planning coming up at Landmark College tonight that we hope people in and about that area will be able to make it to.

It's not that we don't WANT to plan all the write-ins, folks, it's just that we can't possibly be everywhere at once. We've both tried but the technology just doesn't exist yet. But, we've seen nets cast in this forum for write-ins and we're hoping to see some pop up that we will diligently add to Google Calendar and Facebook for maximum attendance potential. Just make sure you post all the details and we'll help with the rest.

We also want to travel around a bit and get our ML selves out of Chittenden County. We'll make our own write-in in other places if it comes to that, but you all know the good times and spots in your area better than we do. If you make it, we will try to come! And we'll bring prizes and snacks!

And let's not forget the value of the impromptu write-in. Oh, but how many of them have started with "I need to get out of my house. I'll be at such and such a place for such and such a time and you should come join me." I know I went to a lot of those, especially at the end of the month!

Okay folks, good luck and fast fingers! We're off!
First Official Write-in - Sun. Nov. 1 from 3-6pm

Celestihel used her Mighty Librarian Powers an' reserved th' Community Room for th' Giant Burlington Area Kickoff Hoohah Whizbang Write-in for th' start of NaNo 2009!

We'll be down in th' Fletcher Free Library's Community Room (it's in th' basement) on Sunday, November first. Join us anytime from 3-6pm if'n you'd like to have some mass writing to get you inspired for th' heights of greatness which y'all will reach this year! (Or, okay, perhaps - like myownself - just piles of verbosity, but heck, either way gets ya to 50k!)

You're allowed to bring snacks and drinks downstairs to aid with th' Novelling, but please make sure they're tightly contained during your stroll through th' library. Th' Fletcher Free also has an excellent wifi connection, for <strike>procrastination</strike> research during Novelling.

It's Sunday, which means free parking on th' street, in th' library parking lot, and in th' Cherry St. garage (which is a block and a half away).

We'd love t'see ya there!

Now, if only I had a plot...or an idea...hrmmm...

There's a whole bunch of things we can do, if people are interested:

*We can set up a Facebook page for th' Verwrimos.

*We can have a Twitter feed.

*We can set up our very own (easy to use!) chat room, if people would like to chat all in one place.

I'll be setting up a Google Calendar shortly, which will allow us all to post info about meetups, check to see if we got th' times correct, etc. etc. This way, we can post events that're happening all over th' state!

It's almost 5 hours in now!
Did anyone stay up for an early-early-early start?
my group here at Champlain did ;D

Two of us hit 5k
1 hit 3k
1 hit 2k
and our last ickle little child got the daily words needed. We're pretty proud of ourselves.
So.
We'll be there for the Burlington write-in to freak out and be super excited~

Anywho, the whole point of this post was to ask how people did, if anyone's nervous and if anyone's excited about their local write in's!
