What exactly does "winning" Nano mean?

I keep saying people say that they "won" Nano. What does that mean? Does it mean they hit 50,000 words or does it mean that the novels are judged and they won for their writing?
Just curious... I'm on 37,000+ words and I feel like I'm winning. lol

Hey Fredericksburg! It's that time of year again... (and yes, here comes my predictable intro speech - hope no one minds if I kick off this thread once more!)

... the time of short days, looooong nights, cold breezes and Pumpkin Spice Lattes (regular, decaf, or in my case, coffee-free). And let's not forget the most important thing: NANOWRIMO! Woohoo! I am so psyched. This is my seventh year. Seven whole years of doing this craziness. It's positively addicting. It's my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving be screwed, NaNo is way more exciting. :-D

The Peninsula crew is doing another rolling write-in today. Look for the signs in the Barnes & Noble cafe (Patrick Henry Mall area store). Come anytime. Stay as long as you'd like. Someone will be there probably until closing at 11 p.m. tonight.

We had a very productive Wednesday night at the cafe.

Hate to interrupt your feverish typing, but you have to take a break sometime, right?

I'm on the Eastern Shore, but I'd love to find some fellow Nano-ers (uugh, I just had a flashback to Mork & MIndy. yikes) to trade insights, bounce ideas off of, and to exchange the necessary kick-in-the-pants some might need to get through this month intact and mostly sane.

I have some Fridays off, and wouldn't mind driving to the VA beach area for a write-in or group thing either...anybody?

Oh, I've done the "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours" thing, and it has worked out well for me in the past, so I wouldn't mind finding someone to swap chapters with when this is all over.

Now get back to work! *talking to myself, not you. But , uh, you should probably get back to writing as well*

From South Hampton Roads on Interstate 64:

Just wondering what activity there is in Blacksburg (ie, Virginia Tech and the surrounding area) I'm actually a local (though I went to school here) and a second time Nanowrimo participent, and this year I'm trying my best to get others involved. I figure there's plenty of students in the area with just not quite enough time, as well as other locals like me.

Anyone here near the Emporia area? I live between Jarratt and Emporia (Grizzard to be precise - if you know where that is I love you!) I'm hoping to find someone nearby to write with/talk to about writing. I'm a stay at home mom of two Kindergarten kids so time of day isn't a factor - I just have to be home to get them off the bus. :)
