Monthly/Twice-Monthly Write-In/Workshops (After November 30)

So, in the "Mira Mesa write-ins" thread, some of us have talked about continuing to meet up after this is all over. I know that we were talking something local to continue, so I thought I'd start a separate thread about it.

I would be happy to keep going to Panera on Saturday mornings once or twice a month to do some writing, have my stuff read, and offer some critique of my own. I need to put the time on my calendar to make sure I actually do it!

Anyway, there the idea now has its own official thread. :)

Great Writer Song

Hi fellow regionals! *waves*

So while I was at work today, I suddenly remembered a song from Snoopy the Musical that has been my absolute favorite for as long as I can remember. It's called "Great Writer" and the song is basically Snoopy writing a novel (or rather, attempting one). As I read the lyrics, I thought Snoopy's attempts at writing a novel sounded much like our various novels, so I thought I would post the song here, for inspiration/humor/groans/giggles, etc. Hope you enjoy it! I took the lyrics off of lyricsondemand.com:

Maybe they're trying to tell me something
Maybe they're trying to tell me
The short story form is unworthy of my talent
Maybe they're trying to tell me
I should attempt, the novel!

Why not?
I have the time
I got the talent
I got the typewriter
I got the plot!

i - t, it
Sometimes we writers take hours
Finding exactly the right word
It, it, it, it
It was a dark and stormy morning
Packed, flat, trite
It was a dark and stormy evening
It was a dark and stormy night
Night, right!

When suddenly a shot was heard
A shot was fired
When suddenly a shot rang out
Rang out
Inspired

The door slammed
The maid screamed
That's building suspense
When suddenly a pirate ship
Appears on the horizon
Appears?
Appeared
Past tense

While millions of people are starving
While millions of people are starving
While millions of people are starving
What?

Food!

The King lived in luxury
Now to thicken the plot

Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas
A boy was growing up
Masterful ol' pup
Brillantly done
You son of a gun
Writing is fun
End of part one

I'll tie all this together later in part two
What's that wonderful smell?
Don't tell me,
Let me guess
Smells like money dipped in honey
Yes, the smell of success
Take a good whiff
Take a good sniff
Pay me a lump that's due
Fame and fortune
Fortune and fame
And now, for part two

A light snow was falling
And the little girl
Small, no
Little, no, small
No, the little girl
Ah, with the tatted shawl
Had not sold a flower all day
Ah, should she be selling matches?
Ah, no, flowers
A violet let's say
She had not sold a violet all day

At that very moment
A young intern was making
An important discovery
The mysterious patient in room
Twenty-three had suddenly awakened
She moaned softly
Could it be that she was the sister
Of the boy in Kansas
Who loved the girl with the tatted shawl
Who was the daughter of the maid
Who had escaped from the pirates
The intern from...
That has a good ring to it
Just see how neatly it all fits together

What about the King?

Stampede, the foreman shouted
And forty thousand head of cattle
Up and down the tiny ramp
Two men rolled on the ground
Rattling beneath the murderous hooves
A left, and a right, and a left, and another left, and right
Isn't this exciting?
An upper cut to the jaw
The fight was over
And so the ranch was saved

There's that wonderful smell called
Ode de happiness
Smells like money
Dipped in honey
Yes, the smell of success
Take a good whiff
Take a good sniff
I stop at one, be rude
Fame and fortune
Fortune and fame
And now
To conclude...

The young intern, sat by himself
In the corner of the coffee shop
Now, zing in the moral old friend
He had learned about medicine
But, more important is
He had learned about life!

The, the, the, the, the,
The end!

----------

USA :: California :: San Diego

Chula Vista Write-Ins, y/n?

Hey guys :D

I was wondering if there's any interest in having write-ins in Chula Vista (or maybe even somewhere else down here). I've hosted some in the past over at the Otay Ranch Town Center Barnes & Noble and once at the Plaza Bonita Borders. If anyone remembers the B&N ones I was the one with the smallest Dell laptop at the table (and probably one of the oldest, sigh).

I'm open to hosting again at either place as it wouldn't be any trouble for me to wear one of my NaNo shirts, drive over and plop myself down in a bookstore cafe for a few hours (yay bookstores! yay caffeine!). For me write-ins would be best on Saturdays (anytime) and/or Friday afternoons after 1pm. I have string ensemble rehearsals on Sundays and a full work week to slog through BUT Fridays are either half day or furlough'd.

Soooo ... thoughts?

- Bri (tothedawn)
Victory!

I missed reaching 50k in fifteen days by 34 minutes, but I am now, finally done and I figure it is time to celebrate. So, whenever you're done, come to this thread and post for the entire world to see.

After days and days of writing like a madman (my word count didn't always reflect where I was because I was not particularly good about updating), I found myself with 40k coming into the weekend. Saturday I was crazy busy and was only about to write 2k, but on Sunday (and a tiny bit of Monday morning) I was able to crank out over 9,000 words to pass the finish line (although when the word count validator said I came up 1,000 words short, bleeding out those final 1,000 was a test of sanity and endurance.

And now, finally, my wife will not have to deal with my insanity for a while.

Thank you Amanda, Mollie and Laurie for pushing me along the way. Competition, I have learned, unleashes my inner madman.
Languages

I never put much thought into it, since I can only speak english, but I suddenly finding myself putting a new character in who speaks in a another language. This is a bit hard, since I don't speak the language at all. Even odder, I find is that I pick Finnish.

Why would I torture myself doing this? The answer for that lies with "Why am I writing 50k words in a month?"

Still, looking at a jumble of words that doesn't make any sense to me some how makes me happy.

So, do your characters speak in different languages? Or can they speak another language? Do they even try? Have you even thought about it?
Today - Saturday, November 15th WRITE IN at the THE LIVING ROOM

Hey all-

If you are coming today, we are located inside The Living Room in the very back room at the big round table. Look for the blonde with the teal Manchester United Jersey on. It has the number 1 on the back and the name Van Der Sar spelled out. There is also a table tent, lots of outlets and a pile of words waiting to join your word count.

Happy writing!

Tell us about your novel

No one's started this thread yet, so I'll do it.
My novel is called "Diana of the Hunt." It's a story I've been building in my head for over a decade now. It was initially intended to be a webcomic, but after three failed attempts, I'm turning prose.
Diana of the Hunt takes place in a stereotypical fantasy world, but the story is dedicated to breaking stereotypes. Diana has the heart of a warrior. She knows she'll be a great adventurer. The problem is that she's' a woman, and most of the world sees a woman with a sword as a big joke.

So what's your story about?
UCSD (other colleges welcome) Check-in!

Heyla! This is my ninth year participating in NaNo. I'm hoping to have a blast, even though I won't have any time at all during the rest of October to even think about planning or writing up a storyline, timeline, character bios, or any of that (many of my friends at Elliquiy seem very fond of doing all of the preparation) this year, thanks to my participation in the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

[ On that note, it's our 10th annual festival! Come out and enjoy some awesome films if you have some leisure time :D ]

Anyway! I was wondering if there were any other students at some local colleges, and UCSD especially, who were participating again this year? I'd love to hold a write-in at UCSD, since I don't have a car and can't be bothered to travel very far away for most of the other write-ins, lest I get lost or find myself unable to get back home.

I'll start. :)

I'm a fourth-year, International Studies major, Japanese Studies minor. I'm super-involved in my student org on campus, and this year I'm going to be the maniac volunteer at the San Diego Asian Film Festival this year! I'm looking forward to my ninth NaNoWriMo, but I'm mostly just hoping to get through the month without failing my midterms!
Saturday Mornings at Monica's --> now at The Living Room on El Cajon Blvd

SD WriMos-

It is with sadness that I have to announce that the Saturday Write Ins are being switched from Monica's at the Park to The Living Room on El Cajon Blvd. Last year when Monica's was still just starting out, we were more than welcomed to hang out with our laptops, drink coffee, eat scones and type away. At today's Write In, Monica threatened to kick the group out because she needed the tables for her regular customers. A fellow WriMo commented last year that he like Monica's and hoped that the chic cafe did well enough to stay in business but not so well that he couldn't get a table. Unfortunately, it appears that Monica's doesn't need nor want our business anymore.

With that, I hope to see you all at The Living Room from 7:30 AM to the last WriMo packs up their laptop every Saturday morning. During the week, I'll get the change made to the calendar. Happy Typing...

San Diego Dares Thread

At the meetup today, we discussed the need for a San Diego specific dares thread.

A 'dare', for the purpose of nano, is a prompt which you have to fit into your story. It can be anything from absurd (ninjas!), to perverse (geriatric porn!), but it doesn't have to be extreme. It could also be plot points (a text message goes wrong), character development (someone falls out of love), a location (road trip to Vegas!) or setting (set a scene underwater).

The point is *someone else is doing the hard work* of thinking of something to write. All you have to do is fit it into your novel.

I see two ways to do dares: 1. GENERAL dares for everyone in the forum (general dares are the same for everyone) and 2. SPECIFIC dares (specific dares are made upon request and should be tailored to the person/story - so describe your story. Once a request for a specific dare goes up, anyone may offer one).

Since it is not yet time to start writing, until November 1, I'd like to start by collecting 'general' dares. Anyone who wishes may offer as many 'general' dares as they like, but by doing so they are pledging to use at least 25% of the general dares (or 10 total, whichever is smaller) in their novel.

EACH TIME YOU USE A GENERAL DARE, YOU MUST POST TO THIS THREAD TO GIVE CREDIT.

I will begin with the following general dares:

1. Mr. Ian Woon appears at least once in your novel. For those of you who do not know Mr. Ian Woon, here is some background

2. You will have a scene in which a critical character, UNCHARACTERISTICALLY, gets drunk high on something they should not have ingested.

3. You will have a scene involving a ninja battle. If genre or timeline do not permit, pirates or brigands may be substituted. However, zombies and vampires may not. Unless they are zombie or vampire ninjas.

[Note: as general dares are added, I will try to keep this first post edited so one can see them all in one place]

----------

USA :: California :: San Diego

I'm SusanneB, facilitator of the Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council's monthly Writers Workshop. We're going to be having Write-Ins for the next three Fridays (11/13, 11/20, 11/27) in the Pine Valley Library from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Come hang with your backcountry NaNoWriMo pals and write, write, write! There are at least two of us doing NaNoWriMo from our Writers Workshop which meets tonight, 11/10, at 7:00 PM in the Pine Valley Library's Community Room (always the second Tuesday of each month), and several other writers are gathering with us on Fridays to write their own projects and cheer us toward our NaNoWriMo goals! We invite all backcountry NaNoWriMo aspirants to join us!
