Northern Wisconsin Check-in thread!

Judging from the other threads here, most of the people in this region are from the southern part of the state, but I found a couple of people in the one thread. So post here if you're from the northern half of the state.

Wisconsin Word War results are in!

So...

As of 10pm on Sunday night, I checked the word count scoreboard, It looks like Wisconsin - Elsewhere just edged out Madison for the win:

Wisconsin - Elsewhere started with 15681 and ended with 19267, for a gain of 3586 words.

Madison started with 14532 and ended with 18097, for a gain of 3565 words.

Milwaukee started with 14238 and ended with 17723, for a gain of 3485 words.

So - Elsewhere region - you guys having any TGIO parties or anything like that???

I don't know about you guys, but it was quite something to be from a desolate, forsaken tundric area and know that other people, all around the world and even in the same desolate, forsaken tundra area as you were doing something this great and huge. Any last thoughts about the process? I've had writer's block for almost five years. This had a lot to do with shaking those cobwebs out and get words back under my command.

Madison is in the mood for a word war. You game?

Alright, everybody.

Some of my WriMos here in Madison are looking for a bit of extra challenge to help out with their motivation, now that we're over the halfway point in the month.

I propose a Cheesehead Word War, between the Madison, Milwaukee & Waukesha, and Elsewhere regions. Let's see who can pound out the most words between now and Sunday. That's two more "work" days, for us M-F people, plus a nice, long weekend to pump up the word counts.

I can see where each region is at this moment, as far as average words per participant. Madison is at 14,532, Milwaukee & Waukesha 14,328, and Elsewhere 15,681.

What say we check the scoreboard again at 10pm on Sunday, and see which region has posted the biggest gain?

Just to put some money where my mouth is, I'll send a special treat to the ML of the winning region, for their TGIO party!

Green Bay Get-togethers

Dagaz and Zhe have yet to put their oars in but the three of us have spoken in RL and plan to meet on Sundays in November at The Atlanta Bread Company. We scheduled ourselves at 2-4 pm last year, mainly because our meeting place closed at 4 (and my hubby needed a time limit to my insanity). The revised location could mean revised times if there are other takers.

Who's here from Central Eastern WI (or is it East Central WI, or...)?

I'm new to WI but not as new to NaNo. Actually arrived here just before last year's NaNo and tried to repeat the previous year's NaNo output but couldn't -- spending too much energy at work. We'll see about this year.

My 18 year-old daughter will be doing this with me again this year (it's an annual challenge now, since 2005). Doubt I could act as a Municipal Liaison but it's slightly possible she and I could meet others (someplace tame and non-alcoholic) NaNo'ing in the area...maybe.

Role Playing Games

I'm curious: How many of us are into role playing games? Is the average writer into things like that? Can be said i'm into the stuff. Beisdes the basic console video games, I've been interested in the DnD type games, but sadly haven't had much participation in the games. Still, the few times I have played, while confusing, have been fun. :)

Fort Atkinson Pre-Nano Meet Up

I know there are at least two others in the area. How would you all feel about meeting up before November starts in a "pre-meeting" like some of the bigger regions are doing? I have to work the football game in Madison this Saturday, but we could plan to meet at around 8:00 that night.

I hear Everybody's Cafe (on Janesville Ave) is open until 10:00. Meals are a little up there, but they serve coffee and are open later than the typical coffee shop in Fort. Once we get together and have a chance to plan it, we can always arrange to meet at Planet Chaos in the back gaming room.

Well, I'll take the initiative...

'Cuz I'm pumped. (Even though I don't really know what I'm gonna do for a story. Haha.)

We've got a little while to be friends here before we're all rivals. So, let's be friends. ;)

Uhh, my most used "tools" when writing are probably Dictionary.com and Google.com. For spell checking and to make sure the word I used in my head is the right word and sometimes to see if it's even a word at all. Sad, I know. Haha.
I typically write short stories involving romance. I'd say at least half my stories use lesbians as their protagonists. I just like girls. Guys are boring. Oh, and I'm an kind of Otaku-ish, yet the only anime that has inspired any of my works would have to be Yuri (Girl x Girl love) and Sailor Moon(It inspired me, along with t.A.T.u., to write a story using lesbian characters. Woohoo!) There's a very, very good chance I'll use a girl x girl romance theme for my Wrimo novel.

So, there's everything you didn't want to know about me, maybe some you did.

What are you doing to get ready?

I posted this into the Horror section already, but I figured it would be worth a cross-post here...

Knowing that this is my first attempt at this, I am definitely "chomping at the bit" to get moving on it. What are you doing to get into the mood of the story, or to start planting the seeds of the plot?

I have begun by creating some names and characters. Getting them set in my head. And -- since there is a technology/corporation aspect to my story/antagonists -- I am writing some of the memos that are being circulated by some of the characters. These will not see the release of the story, but they are helping me to set up motivations. The next weekend is pretty spent for me, so this is probably the only thought I am going to be able to put into it.

What are you doing?

What is exciting to you? It's important to know these things, because I think they can be fuel to keep you writing about something you enjoy, rather than something which is sluggish and bothersome. So, what excites you?

The surreal and unsettling usually excite me. Everything from the supernatural to odd behaviour. Visuals which have double meanings, and characters who may only be real to certain people. Things which make you question the reality you thought you knew.
