List of Winners

Hi there,

Someone suggested that it would be nice to have the list of winners in one place like we did last year and I think that is an excellent suggestion.

I've created this topic for that purpose. However, if anyone adds new comments to this topic, I will not be able to edit it and add other Winners to it.

So please, send me a nanomail or post in the other Winner list to get your name included here. Thanks!

I'm new to this!

Hey all! I am new to this NaNoWriMo thing and would appreciate any advice for newbies that you can provide. I don't even know what kind of novel I will write about. I do love deep character driven stories, so it will probably be like that, but as for plot, I have no idea! I know I have time to figure this out, but any tips on narrowing it down would be helpful. I'm also fairly new to the Vancouver area, as I moved to Burnaby from Edmonton last December.
----------
There is a beginning. There is no beginning of that beginning. There is no beginning of that no beginning of beginning. There is something. There is nothing. There is something before the beginning of something and nothing, and something before that. Sudd

Hello?? (taps tentatively on the microphone) anybody out there?

Sue shifts on her feet, slightly uncomfortable with her brashness. Maybe folks aren't ready to start thinking about NaNo 2008 yet. Maybe they're still recovering from last year.

Gathering her courage, she speaks a bit louder into the mic. Her voice bounces back to her as it echoes through the room.
“Last year was my first NaNoWriMo and I’m already stoked to do it all over again.

I know it’s over two months away but I can’t help myself. I’m already thinking about which of these unruly characters in my head, would grant me the most peace once I wrestle them to the page. The goody-two-shoes whiners are attacking me with their high-pitched ‘pick mes’ while the interesting dark-horse brooding types, are feigning disinterest, as they watch me carefully from their lounging positions against the back wall. Decisions, decisions.”

“So I’ll ask, ‘Who is coming back to do the insanity again? Who is new? Where is everybody?’”

----------

January Meet-Up

Hey boys and girls.

December has come and gone and it seems to me like a pretty good time to do another NaNo meet up. So! Sunday, January 20th at 1:30 pm. We'll meet at the Blenz across the street from the Grandville skytrain station and we'll have fun.

Seriously. Fun. You have to have it.

Hope to see you there.
Huge Thank You

This was my first year participating in NaNo. From start to finish it was a blast. It was great to be able to meet other writers in the Vancouver area and Inez did a wonderful job making sure we all had a chance to socialize, stay motivated and celebrate when all was said (or rather written) and done.

See you all next year!
The final push

I'm freaking out a bit because I'm got just under 5,000 words to write before midnight (that'd be in about 5 hours). I've written 3,000 in the last 2 hours, so I know it's possible - and I've completed NaNo twice before - but still, I need some encouragement! How about the rest of you? Any other stragglers, or am I on my own in this last minute rush?
Time Zones - make sure yours is set correctly

I think everyone has their time zone set correctly, but you might want to double-check. The system didn't update properly when we switched off of Daylight Savings time.

This won't be a problem if you finish early, but if it is getting close to 11pm on November 30th, you might not be able to validate if the clock shows that it is already after midnight.
Warning - Santa Claus parade on Nov. 25th in Vancouver

For those of you that aren't planning to stay home and watch the Grey Cup, you'll run into a bit of a crowd when you head to Blenz for the Sunday meetup.

The Santa Claus parade is happening Sunday starting at 1pm. I'm still going to see if I can get to our usual spot and I think I'll get lucky since the majority of people will be outside watching the parade. Just as long as I can get to the building that is. I have no idea what the buses will be like.

I hope to see people there.

Maybe next year we should change the meetups to Saturdays instead, since this happens every year. I'll give it some thought.

Happy Noveling!

Sunday Meet Up

Now I hope I'm not stepping on any toes with this. However, I did promise some of the other Wrimo's that I would post this and then hold up my end. So here's the deal, we'll be having a meet up, to chat and relax and catch up on how things are going every Sunday at one o'clock at the Grandville Blenz.

For those who don't know that's the coffee shop directly across from the Grandville skytrain station. Generally speaking, we sit up by bathroom along the back where there are outlets for computers and we can make fun of all of the people who forget to get buzzed in to the bathroom.

I'll have a little NaNo table card at the very least for the first week. After that I make no promises.

Are we all having fun???

I certainly hope everyone's having a much better time this year than I am!

School has overtaken my life (again) so my wrodcount stinks! Suppose that's just the downfall of taking too many ology courses 0.0 On the plus side, I'm following my trend...win in 04, hit halfway in 05, win with time to spare in 06, be lucky to hit half way in 07? Heh.

Also have beena lil mia in both forums and meetups this year due to a lovely lil cold that's taunting me (right as I think I'm feeling better, it flairs up the next day - done this 3 times now).

So....anyone else feeling like me right now and need a lil moral support by way of comments/virtual hugs? Figured I'd start up a place for us :)

So I start it off with...virtual hugs to all those feeling like me right now! Err..about wordcounts, not about illness - if anyone else is ill, I'll give ya virtual meds :P
Another December 1st Gathering (FYI)

Hi All,

I haven't had a chance to come out to any of the few events yet. Is there a halfway party today that I'm missing?
Anyway, I'm used to having an evening TGIO party and as such will be heading to somewhere on Granville Island on the evening of December 1st to celebrate. I'm thinking of hitting The Cats Meow, although I'm open to suggestions. I guess I'm just used to celebrating a certain way since my days in Toronto - a local establishment with a comfy, "writer-type" vibe and definitely in the evening.
This isn't meant to step on any toes, and I certainly hope you all enjoy yourselves at the big official gathering, but if any of you are interested in something in the evening (or can't make it out due to work, etc.), respond here and we'll work something out.

Cheers,
Liz

Hey guys!

Me again... Third year's a charm, right? So a meeting *will* happen somewhere nearby this year?

That just leaves the question (as always) - where and when?

Leave suggestions ;P Though for the "when" we'll have to work with the Vancouver meetings and stuff, but we can get the "where" cleared up :P
Surrey-Delta-Langley Meetups?

Well, last year there seemed to be some interest in having a meet up that wasn't so way the far out in Vancouver, and someone's already asked about it this year. Hopefully I won't be as lazy as last year, and actually try to organize something. :p

I'll start by saying right off the bat that I'll be at SFU Surrey Monday-Wednesday-Friday, probably by the Blendz coffee in the campus (As opposed to the one by the elevators, 50 paces outside the campus) between 12:30 and 1:30 wherein I have a break in my schedule. Anyone can feel free to join me there if I'm not elsewhere. (I'll have a stupid silver laptop sans a battery. seriously, my laptop looks like it's gone through a war. The battery's kaput. :( Also probably be wearing a brown hoodie.)

So, who is interested in a closer writing group, where would you be coming from, and which day is best for you? We can try figuring something out that's close to those people who could actually attend the meetings.

My best day would be a Saturday, and I'm coming from Ocean Park in the South Surrey area.

"Here in NaNoLand, we celebrate November 8 as the start of Week Two of NaNoWriMo and Municipal Liaison Appreciation Day.

Our volunteer Municipal Liaisons organize write-ins and bring other forms of NaNo joy to cities and towns in 32 countries every November. We couldn't do it without them, and today we say: We love you MLs!"

How to write a book...

Found the text below here: http://www.yankeepotroast.org/archives/2005/02/how_to_write_a.html

Basically since starting NaNo, I feel I qualify for about 20/21 of them. I'll leave it up to the imagination which ones. Thought the rest of you would enjoy this too...

How to Write a Book

 1. Do absolutely nothing until you can see the whites of your deadline’s eyes.

 2. If you’ve got co-writers, try to disagree as much as possible. If you’re of the same opinion regarding a section of text, bicker about dinner choices.

 3. Criticize what little progress you’ve achieved and doubt what little talent you possess.

 4. Do not write any new words when there are still old words that have only been rewritten twelve times. No sentence is complete until it’s lost all traces of your original thought.

 5. Complain about the pressure of a looming deadline to everyone you know. This will ameliorate the jealousy and bitterness felt by friends without book deals. It will also put an end to social invitations that may hamper your writing progress, as your former friends will now hate you.

 6. Stop sleeping. Complain about how tired you are too.

 7. Never have a mental breakdown before 11 p.m.

 8. Do not postpone other projects so that you can focus on the current one. It’s better to spread yourself so thin that you produce an evenly distributed amount of complete crap.

 9. If you’ve gotten this far without a single technical foul-up, now’s a good time to download something viral.

 10. Make a schedule for yourself, but do not even remotely follow it. Instead, continually do some mental math that divides your remaining pages by the rapidly dwindling number of hours.

 11. The best writing is that which is compiled from dozens of different documents, including things you’ve e-mailed or text-messaged to yourself. Try to create separate documents on as many different computers as are available. Some things will be irrevocably lost, and hours will be spent cursing. Learn a lesson about orderliness, but do not act upon such knowledge.

 12. Some terribly constructed sentences always make good low-hanging fruit for your co-writers to edit, thus protecting your awful idea from their meddling.

 13. Were you napping? Stop that. It’s 11 o’clock already. Start freaking out, hard.

 14. If you’ve worked hard three days in a row, take a hard-earned day off. And it looks like snow tomorrow, so you might as well take the whole weekend. But a day off from writing is not a day off from complaining!

 15. If you haven’t drastically gained or lost weight, you’re just not writing well.

 16. Assume your sources are reputable. When some accidental research reveals the source that serves as foundation for your work to be as reliable as grandma’s memory, briefly consider the amount of work it will take to correct things at this late hour, then fuck it and move on.

 17. Pick up any book on your bookshelf, skim a few pages, and admit that it’s a terrible book… but better than anything you’ll ever write. Cry.

 18. If one of your co-writers is something of an optimist, shit in his hat.

 19. If you’re not panicking, call your agent and request they he or she panics. You’ll have no problem panicking afterward.

 20. Call your mom.

 21. Your time is more valuable than your money. Spend as much cash as you’ve got in your pockets.
----------

Write-ins during the week

I've added one write-in session for downtown Vancouver. This is for Wednesday, November 7th at 7pm. I haven't added for the other weeks yet, because I want to see what the atmosphere is like at that cafe. But I will be setting up write-ins for Wednesdays.

There are already other write-ins scheduled at that time on Wednesday out in Langley. During the week, I think it is fine to schedule different write-ins at the same time since people are less willing to travel very far on a weeknight.

I am still thinking about setting up an "online write-in" so that those without laptops can take part in a write-in as well, but I haven't ironed out the details yet.

Check the Regional calendar to see if there is a write-in that you can make it to. I do know there was discussion about other write-ins, but I haven't received any information that I can add to the Regiona calendar.

Currently scheduled meetings and write-ins are listed at the bottom of the message list in the forum.

Tips for Battling Boredom?

It's only the fifth day and I'm already bored with myself! It's not that my plot doesn't have plenty of potential, I just can't seem to get out of one narrow section of it (maybe because I don't know what the rest of it is going to be yet)...

In an effort to stay writing, I've been asking friends and family to send me "first lines", which I use to start a paragraph I hope I'll eventually be able to use.

Anyone have any other clever tips for getting your energy back?

----------
