Hey peeps!

This is a brainstorming forum for the TGIO party. This is when we all relax after a job well done (or a job well tried), get together and just have a good time. Last year was fun, though the turn-out was low, so maybe we should just have it in Hava Java or something along those lines? Maybe the first Friday in December?

Lemme know what you guys think, and when we should have it. The more people, and the more interesting the idea, the better.

Setting: here!

Is anybody setting their novel in Newfoundland? Has anybody done so before?

I've never spent much time out of the province - I don't feel very comfortable setting my NaNo in a real place I've not spent a lot of time. I could, of course set it somewhere else and look things up, or just a generic place and make things up.

I think it could be interesting to have the main character be from Newfoundland. For a story with superheroes you really expect the HQ to be a big city - but since the hero I'm formulating is really a medium-sized fish in a small pond, I think it'd actually end up fitting quite well to have them from here.

And then the Villain has a floating (on water, not air) palace that most of the story will happen in. I'm thinking about him currently hiding in the fogs of the Grand Banks.

What do you think a NL superhero would do? What kind of heroes and villains would we have? Maybe he helps the coast guard?

Hi, everyone!

At the end of the month (Nov. 28th), I'm coming up to St. John's to visit my parents (and the rest of my mom's family, and my brother - if anyone's interested in my ties to Newfoundland!). I was wondering if there was anything going on in the last days of November, or perhaps a TGIO party, that I might pop in to. I'd rather like to know some of the NaNo community in the city I consider my second home.

Prompt Fills

So at the launch meeting we played a game where we were given prompts to fill. I figured that, those of us who want to, could post the fills we wrote to show how much fun those people that weren't able to make it to the meeting (or had to leave before everyone read theirs, like my sister and I) missed out on. I'm fairly sure that we had one of these last year.

I'll put mine up to start off with.

Prompt: Write about the cliche "drown your sorrows"

Fill:

I watched as my younger brother played in the surf of the beach behind our family's cabin. Our parents were in the kitchen cooking lobster for supper that night.

"Bela! Come swim!" Ivan shouted. I looked away from the castle I was building to where he was. I had always disliked the little monster, he had done nothing but ruin my life since he had been born, but there was nothing I could do. Our parents loved him too much.

"Bela! Come on!"

He was at my side, pulling at my arm. He wasn't allowed far out without someone being with him.

I smiled widely and let him lead me toward the water. Ivan's smile was even bigger the further out we went, our parents weren't watching us so I could get away with letting him.

"Hey Ivan!" I called to him.

He turned to look at me. "Yeah?" He looked so happy and innocent.

I didn't care. I grabbed his arm and forced his head under the surface and held him there. He struggled to get away, but I was stronger.

While talking with a friend of mine, I accidentally discovered the secret to her ever growing word count. Good evening, I'm O'Rourke.

So, Newfoundlander NaNoWriMos, got an idea yet? 8D
Why don't we share the rough idea we've got for our novels? Or, what we're thinking about doing for those who haven't decided yet, haha. Anyway, this is a place to chat about your writing as ideas come to you, so fire away!

Mine's a superhero fiction novel (under speculative fiction, sometimes mixed with other genres, too) and you can read a synopsis on it in my novel info if you're so inclined. My main character's Jacoby--and Noel, but to a lesser degree--and he's an intern...a superhero intern, to the biggest superhero organisation in the city, the GTH (the Gelvelle Trust of Heroes). His love interest goes missing, kidnapped by a 'villain'--that'd be Antiquarian--so he's like "screw the pay raise, I gotta save her!" Then he finds out Antiquarian didn't actually kidnap her.

Things kinda go downhill for him from then on.

This is where you can post any questions or concerns regarding specifics in your story.

I'll get the ball rolling with a question to all you hardcore Newfoundlanders out there! I received an email from the ML for Dartmouth, NS, who wants to set her novel in rural Newfoundland, in "a small town surround by woods, with 3 even smaller towns fairly close by." Does anyone know of a place like this? I'm only familiar with St. John's and the area, so some help/ideas would be appreciated and I'll forward them to her.

This thread is to discuss what date and time to have the meeting BEFORE NaNo '09 begins; to meet one another, throw around ideas, and become comfortable with our amazing group.

Because we are having meetings on Fridays, I think we should have the launch on Thursday, October 29 at 7pm at Atlantic Place, to ensure that those who have Hallowe'en plans that weekend will not be disrupted.

Salutations, fellow crazy writers!

Welcome to Nano 2009! My name is James (but most call me Jam--the guy, not the preserve) and I'll be your host for the next two months while we work out our ideas, get to know one another, enter the madness with ever-so-much optimism, and go completely mad by the end of November.

I don't know about any of you, but I am shocked that it's been ten months since we finished up Nano. I want to say that after having done this for four years, last year was by far our most successful year in St. John's and I am very much looking forward to it again this year.

The writing community in St. John's and across the province is so diverse and I'm happy to see that our Nano group is reflective of that; different age groups, backgrounds, and people originally from Newfoundland are just a few examples of our varied walks of life that will only help us through a very challenging month of, as the Nano gods put it, "literary abandonment".

Please feel free to post on these forums whatever you like (within reason) about story ideas, concerns, questions, etc. If you have any questions for me about the Nano process or the program in general, don't hesitate to write me on here or email me at amelioratio@gmail.com.

As the time grows nearer, we'll plan our launch and some dates, locations, and activities, but for now, enjoy the quiet before the storm of keystrokes.
