Email/Unsubscription Problems

We've had a few reports of unsubscriptions not working. We're aware of the PM notifications not saving changes, and the Database error: user -2 not found in {subscriptions_user} table error message, that's a separate issue. This is for people who have attempted to unsubscribe, and are still getting email, or who are subscribed, but not getting emails they should.

If you're having any other issues, please review the Known Issues thread first before posting.

If you are receiving email when you shouldn't be, or vice versa, please provide us with some information to help us see if we can figure out where the problem is.

Please note that reports which don't contain this info may be deleted. "Me too" doesn't really help us trace the problem.

Here's what we need:

If you have unsubscribed, and are still receiving emails:

************************
Date unsubscribed:
Email provider: (Not your email address. just the domain (@yourisp.com). If you're not comfortable giving us this information on the forums, just send us a PM.)

Method used to unsubscribe:
--Direct unsubscribe link email
--Unsubscribe from all email link in email
--No emails from HQ checkbox in edit user settings
--Manage notifications page (indicate which boxes checked/unchecked)
************************

If you have subscribed, but are not receiving emails you should

READ THIS FIRST: Known Issues [UPDATED November 21, 2009]

Howdy and welcome to the Tech Help forum.

This is a forum for asking questions about how to do stuff with the site.
It's also the forum for reporting bugs.
You can also ask general interest tech questions here and maybe someone will answer you.

Here's what we know is broken. Please review this topic, and do not add additional reports for these issues unless new information is available. Please do not respond to this topic with new reports; it will be faster and more efficient to create a new topic, since as these things get longer, they take longer to load. :) Bug reports posted here will be deleted without notice.

Before reporting any new bugs, please give the first couple of pages of the Tech Help forum to make sure it hasn't already be reported; duplicate topics will be referred to older threads and locked.

Quick & Dirty XHTML Primer

I'm sure most of you have noticed that this forum works a bit differently than the old one did. No longer are we stuck with the ancient BB code... we've stepped up to XHTML, baby!

This... can be confusing. So, I'm going to do a quick primer of the tags you'll be using most often, and hopefully this will help you post signatures, add emphasis to your posts, and overall look REALLY cool.

For a complete list of tags available on this forum, you'll find them on the Compose Tips Page (Thanks HedgeMage!) - Here are the ones you'll use most often on this forum.

Links

First, is the link. In web designer speak, we use an anchor tag for this... what it means to you is that you can format your links prettily.

You can just post the link like so: http://www.nanowrimo.org and the forum will automatically convert it for you. However, you might want to make it clickable, and pretty, so that it doesn't ugly-up your post!

Like So.

Here's how you do this:
<a href="URL">Clickable Text</a>

It's important to remember to "close your tag", that is, add a </a> at the end of the text, otherwise everything after it will be clickable. Not pretty at all. ;)

You can also do a clickable email link the same way, only instead of using a URL, you'll use the following within the quotation marks: mailto:EMAIL ADDRESS

Be wary of this one, though, as any email address you may post on the forum may be harvested by spam bots. It's generally not a wise idea to post your email address unless absolutely necessary.

Italics

Italics were updated with the new XHTML specifications. The technical term for this is "deprecated". The old tag, <i>, is no longer valid, so it doesn't work. The arcane deity known as the "W3C" decided this is so, so it is. ;)

Author search

I don't think this is all that big of a deal but I figured you guys should know. For some reason I can search for my user name but according to the search I don't exist. I figured this was a problem on my end but I can't find anything that says weather or not you show up on a search so I don't know what to do.

Avatar

I loaded a picture as my avatar and when I went to change it and put a new picture in, it won't work! It just keeps my old picture.
I've tried several times with no luck.

Mysterious lines in microsoft word

This isn't a problem with the Nano site, but I'm hoping there are enough computer types here to help me out.

The other night, I tried separating two paragraphs with a long line of ************s When the line got to be as long as the page, it turned into a line of little squares. Now I can't get that line of squares to dissappear. I can't highlight and delete, I can't delete, I can't backspace it out of existence.

Worse, NEW ones seem to be popping into existence, seemingly at random.

How do I get rid of these? How do I stop this???? It's making me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!

Validating problem

I have some trouble with validating my word count.
When I enter my manuscript in the Word Count Validator and click 'submit' my word count does get updated, but even though I am well above 50 000 words, I cannot click the 'Verify and Win' nor 'Collect WInner Goodies links'. They just stay gray..
Did I forget to do something? Or is there another problem?
