Word Wars, Prompts & Sprints
Posted by: kim_mcc_3 on 12/01/2009
Well, NaNoWriMo is over, so being behind is not an issue anymore, but this is a place for all of us (and any newcomers) to meet throughout the year too.
We meet here four times a week:
Sunday afternoon (1-4ish, CST)
Monday evening (7-11ish, CST)
Thursday late night (9-1ish, CST)
Friday evening (7-11ish, CST)
If you can't make it, we'll see you for the next one.
Cryndyl and I are currently compiling a list of helpful sites and other competitions throughout the year that we will post here eventually.
Rules are for word warring:
1. Everyone writes at the time and for the length designated, and posts their wordcount at the end.
2. The person with the most words for the time limit gets to pick the time and length of the next word war.

Hi, everyone! My name is Julie Martin (aka "juliebug") and I've been doing NaNoWriMo since November 1st, 2002. On that very day, I created the ever-popular #NaNoWriMo channel on my IRC server at GoodChatting.com. I was asked to write a sort of one-stop post for all the info relating to the chat community, so please do read this entire post.
First of all, the community has grown by leaps and bounds since 2002's original six or so regulars and has, in recent years, been accessible from the NaNo site itself, under "Fun Stuff". Due to various reasons, the chat is not accessible from the NaNo site this year. We'd like to thank the folks behind NaNoWriMo for their awesomeness in having our little chat channel be official for a few years!
That said, the chat, despite no longer being accessible from the NaNo site, is still alive and kicking, don't you worry! :)
There are a couple of ways for you to access the chat.
1) Java Applet. This is the same method (and applet) that was used by the NaNo site in past years, just hosted at a different location.
http://www.goodchatting.com/rooms/nanowrimo.php
2) IRC client. It's highly encouraged that you connect using your own copy of an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client. For Windows, we recommend mIRC (http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html) and for Macs, we recommend Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/).
Within mIRC, for server, we're already listed. Find "Goodchatting - random server" and use that as your server to connect to. Once connected, type:
/join #nanowrimo
Et voila!
For Colloquy, here's all the pertinent information:
Server: irc.goodchatting.com
Port: 6667
Channel: #nanowrimo

Rules, Regulations and Ops.

Your ops (or moderators) include:

So, I'm in a creative writing class at my high school (along with AP Literature and journalism) and our assignment everyday is to write for twenty minutes and produce two or more pages of writing. I really like this because I have never participated in the idea that writers should write everyday- they should, but I don't. Anyway, I need ideas! I've never writen anything that short before! Ideas please!

Did anyone else really enjoy the @NaNoWordSprints Twitter word sprints last November? They were so helpful I'm going to continue doing them all year. (Or until I lose all my followers because of word count Twitter spam. ^_^) I'll be doing some every Tuesday and Thursday from10pm to 12 am EST on my @leofair account.
In case you didn't get a chance to try these in November, or have not had a chance to explore Twitter in general, here are some instructions + the schedule I'll be running mine:
10:00- First 30 minute writing session starts
10:30- Stop. Take a 15 minute break and post (also known as tweet) your word count for the first sprint with the hashtag #wordsprint somewhere in the message so we can use the Twitter search bar to find your tweet. You can also post a small excerpt from it if you like. These make the sprints a bit more fun, but you can just post your word count if you're shy about sharing your writing.
10:45- Second 30 minute sprint starts.
11:15- Stop, post your word count for the second sprint and an optional excerpt and take a short break.
11:30- The third (and final) word sprint starts
12:00- Post your word count for the third sprint
If you want to run some of these too, post the time (or times) you'll be running them and your Twitter account name here or post to Twitter using the #wordsprint hashtag.

I just wanted to give a big shout out and thanks to everyone who hung out in the wrimowars aim chat this November. You were an awesome crew and I credit the fact I actually won this year mostly to you guys. Thank you all!
:D I was lessblindthanyou, btw.
I got two questions for ya'll!
One is that I saw some great excerpts flying around... can I read anyone's novels? I need some help with my procrastination! XD
Second is, if any of you aren't done with your novel (as I'm certainly not), does anyone want to hang out in there a couple times a week and continue warring? I'm hoping to bust out another 30k or so during December, and your help was awesome till now and I suspect would be for time to come.

I'm saying start one at the :45 for ten, if anyone is up for it.
I know it's after nanowrimo, but I have more that I need to write

I got a lot done during the Twitter sprints (and while in person with the write-ins).
I'm wondering if anyone's interested in future sprints hosted through some Twitter account? I write year round, monthly, and usually weekly -- though I'm about to start grad school so I'm betting my free writing will be cut down. Anyway, I'd love to have an account set up with a handful of people willing to host sprints a couple of times a week...?
Does this sound good? Is there interest? I still like the idea of Twitter because even if you don't want an account you can watch the feed from a user.
