Geezer Clubhouse - Silver Edition

Once upon a time, we Geezers had a clubhouse of our own, where we stopped in to chat, shoot the breeze, ask questions, get help and inspiration. As Starfarer2007 mentioned in another thread, it seems to have disappeared, and we have The Smoking Pen in its place. The Pen is one of my favorite places, and I visit often, but its magical atmosphere isn't always right for the kinds of conversation some geezers need from time to time.

So ... I have some connections with a certain blue-eyed carpenter who threw together this clubhouse for us in record time. I thought maybe the questions I have bugging me lately might get answered if I hung out here long enough. Maybe someone would wander by with an answer or two. I'm usually not overly chatty on the forums, but when I get stuck with my Nanonovel, I stop by The Pen for diversion. Now I'm here with a couple questions:

Does anyone title their individual chapters? Or do you just number them? How many words do you think make up a chapter?

Also, I'm using Word 2007. Got a glitch that has me talking to myself. Usually I can use the tab key to indent uniformly when I begin a new paragraph. But after using it a while, it will start mysteriously jumping my curser back a page or two when I hit tab, instead of just indenting the new line. Then I have to take time to bring it back down to where it belongs, and use my space bar to indent. Is my tab key under some malicious spell?

Hope I have not overstepped any boundaries by setting up a clubhouse. Just thought it might fill a need.
Good luck to everyone!

The Smoking Pen Bar and Grill 2009

I unlocked the door and pushed it open with one finger. A long drawn out squeek played until the door bumped the wall. I stepped into the Smoking Pen with some trepidation. Dust blew across the floor before me and my shoe prints followed me.

Everything was shrouded in sheets. I grabbed the corner of the one that covered the beautiful bar and yanked hard. It slid off and a cloud of dust billowed around me. I sneezed. When the dust settled I smiled at the luster of the long curved front.

We had a wonderful time here last year. I wondered if we'd be able to create such an exciting atmosphere again this year. And would we all be here. I'd lost half of myself since the door had closed behind me in early December. I hoped no one else had lived through that kind of darkness. But now, I needed light and sound and mystery. And Bruce pulling my pigtails while Mer undulated and shimmered to the accompaniment of clattering clam shells.

I pulled another sheet off a nearby table and chairs and sank down onto the chair. A long sigh escaped me. I felt as if I had just come home.

I smiled. It begins.

Is this crazy or what?

So I had this idea....since it took me 39000 words to find the core of my story (nothing like I thought) I got to thinking that when November is over (and December too because the holidays are too hectic already) I am going to take January and start all over with 50,000 words in 31 days. Why? Because now that I understand my plot and my characters, I would like to write the story as it is yearning to be written. It's the ultimate edit: start from scratch and rewrite the same story, without the benefit of my previous (mostly forgettable) 50K words but with the benefit of insight.

Clear as mud?

I'm so good in bed but . . .

Now that I've got your attention, I'm sorry to disappoint you but I mean I'm so good at thinking up story lines, filling plot holes, coming up with snappy dialogue and so on, when I lie in bed.

I went for a nap yesterday afternoon and when I got up I finally knew the who, what, where, when and why, of my story.

The problem is, when I do this at night, I've forgotten it all the next morning. I think of perfect sentences, even whole paragraphs full of scintillating text, as I lie in that relaxed, snug, warm(!) borderland between consciousness and sleep. If I try to write it down by the time I've switched the light on and grapped paper and pen - it's gone. Disappeared like frost in sunshine. I've even resorted to taking a dictaphone to bed with me (she breathed, huskily) but it's too much effort to switch it on and my mouth won't form the words (zzzzz).

I don't suppose there's a gadget out there that can take the thoughts straight from your brain and store them for later, is there?

Does anyone else have this problem? And how do/would you overcome it?

Week four - home stretch

So, who's still writing away, confident of making it but eying holidays and month's end warily? LOL

I want to get to at least 42000-43000 today and over 45,000 tomorrow. Tuesday I only have two or three hours to write (and do everything else on the computer) and Wednesday I will be baking desserts to take to my Thanksgiving party, Thursday which is out of town. I'll have Friday all day and then am out of town again Saturday and Sunday partying. So, I want to get to like 49500 on Friday evening, LOL.

Is there anybody else who is below 20K still? Is there any hope?

It seems like everyone else is 30-40K if they aren't already done. I got 9K quickly and then my effort all went into passing two classes and getting my work done. I dove back into today and am up past 13K but I am not sure it is worth even trying for the finish line with only nine days left. What is 37K divided by 9?

my story needs to wind down

Over 30,000 words and my story continues to gain momentum. Isn't it time that I quit putting my characters into situations and start winding down the story? If anyone has any ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks and best wishes to all :)

Looking for Information on Prices in 1948-1952

Surprisingly, I couldn't find much of any use by Googling.
I'd like to find some common consumer everyday purchase that cost around 15 cents in 1948-52.
I think that a coke or a candy bar or a newspaper would have been too cheap (more like 5 cents.)
An ice cream sundae would have been more expensive (more like 25 cents.)
Movie tickets seem higher yet (35 cents.)
The only thing I found so far was a slice of pie or cake, which seemed to sell for about 15 cents, and a lot of canned goods, which oddly (to me, anyway) were priced at 15 and a half cents a can (I guess they assumed you'd buy in pairs?)
I tried a pack of cigarettes and bus fares but couldn't find anything; I could find bus routes but not fare prices (this would be for Los Angeles/Beverly Hills.)
Maybe magazines were around 15 cents back then?
I looked for cigars, but only found prices on them by the box.
Nylons were much more expensive.
I'm kind of stuck on this. It's supposed to trigger my the solution to my mystery - "Hey! A dollar five is a week's worth of ????"
Then the victim of the crime will remember telling someone about something he'd rent to him for 15 cents a day and he'll finally know who the culprit is.
Thanks for any advice on what it could be, or a website that would be of some help. I only went back four or five pages in Google searches on "prices 1948". I tried searching on images, too, which helped some, but I'm still thinking there's something better than what I've thought of so far.
I guess I could use a different total amount, but I think that a dollar five is an odd enough amount that it might make my characters puzzle over it for a bit. If it was an even amount, like a dollar, or a multiple of a larger coin, like a quarter, I don't think it would have the same effect.

Storms

There were high winds November 16th, and they were battering away at my windows, when suddenly, the screen flashed white and a new 'Word' site came up. Where did my novel go, all 17,000 + words absolutely gone.

I spent the rest of the evening searching the entire computer, and I could not find it. I searched 'Help' to find out how I could recover my novel, and nothing they suggested worked.

It looks like I have to start from scratch.

If there is any computer expert writing too, do you have any suggestions? Why can this happen - when I have surge protector?
