There was a fire with a small group around it. They were silent, from what he could tell, some lying on their back, others combing each others’ hair out. Paul couldn’t think of how to describe them as a group – mixed race, perhaps, except they were all so similar in ways other than skin colour that to call them mixed race was about as accurate as saying the same of a pack of differently coloured wolves. One of the men, naked save for a strip of leather around his neck, was a pitch black ebony, in contrast to the small, milky-skinned boy sitting a few feet away. Yet, they were the same people.
