Still Waters

They were coming. He could smell them. The smell from their clothes identified them as the ones with the stinger. His muscular right front leg started pawing the deep bedding. Despite the twelve-inch layer of sweet straw his hoof found the boards beneath. He was frantic to find a way out before they came, before they pricked him again.
The footsteps got closer. He knew they were coming for him. His rich red coat became wet with sweat as adrenaline started to flow in anticipation of the encounter.
