An Island Entire
an excerpt
When Lucy opens her eyes, the world is bright, blue, and calm. A breeze in the air is warm, but immediately the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, and her heart begins to hammer at the walls of her chest. She doesn't recognize the sky above her. With a jolt, she sits up. Her eyes dart around her as her breathing becomes more shallow. She is sitting in a rowboat, seemingly new, covered in a pristine coat of paint - fire engine red. All around her, vast and emotionless, is water. A lake, perhaps, but the faint scent of salt suggests an ocean. There are no clouds, and the sea and sky are colored so similarly that she can barely make out the horizon.
Lucy grips the sides of the boat and tries to pull herself up. She expects to fall over until she realizes the boat, though in shallow water, is grounded on sand. She turns around slowly, cautiously.
An island.
