Brief Author Bio: Hi, my name is Sarah, I live in Alaska and I'm 21. By the time this year's contest is over, though, I'll be 22. My birthday is in November. I have been writing since I was 13 after I fell in love with it after writing my first Harry Potter fanfiction. One day I hope to be a published author. It would be a miracle, and it's a secret dream of mine, if I could be a writer professionally. I plan on applying for college, finally! I know I'll be getting a teaching degree and that I want to take the Japanese classes. But I'm not sure if I'll end up being a Japanese language teacher or if I'll major in English so I can be a creative writing teacher. We'll see! Living on my own this year and it's been great. A bit stressful at times but I love my little place and wouldn't go back to where I was. |

Synopsis: Second Chances
Melanie has had what most would call a fairly normal life. For her, it was tough. Always the outcast, few friends, and usually alone. But recently her life has been hell- so it seems to her. Her past three boyfriends cheated on her, she just got fired, and worst of all, the stuffed animal who got her through her years of lonliness has gone missing.

Roger wanted nothing more than to be in the middle of the action. Sitting still wasn't an option for him. But it was one night when all that changed. During an attempted raid he and his comrades were ambushed and left to die. Though that wasn't the end of Roger's life. He was given a choice: stay dead and live in peace for the rest of eternity or return to earth and help others. Not wanting to sit around, even after death, Roger opted to help others.

It was supposed to be like any other assignment. He'd be with the child until he, or she, neared puberty, and then they'd have no need for him anymore. After that, he would move on to the next assignment. But she was different. Twenty-three years after he'd been assigned to the newborn babe he was still around, she still needed him. But it was when she needed him the most that things changed.
Now he's been given a small amount of time to help Melanie get her life back on track before his human form is taken away and he becomes another child's toy. But as he is finally able to talk back to her he begins to realize that he doesn't want another assignment. All he wants is what he never wanted in his first life: to settle down with someone and live out the rest of his days in relative quiet.
But the terms were for him to direct Melanie towards her career and help her meet the man she's to marry. He was never supposed to get attached. Now he has to figure out a way to stay with her, but as a human.
Excerpt: Second Chances
Adam raised his hand, ready to hit her and Melanie threw her arms up in defense and shrank back, but nothing came. She heard a grunt and then something heavy thudded in the bushes to her right. Putting her arms down she looked at what had happened. Adam was lying on the ground a few feet away, groaning. In front of her, with a very dangerous gleam in his eyes was Roger, the man who had saved her from falling in the fountain. When he had gotten there, she had no idea.
His breathing came hard, making his broad chest rise and fall fast. His curly hair was wild, making him look like some sort of barbarian. He suddenly turned to her, his features softening.
“Are you alright?” he asked, taking her gently by the shoulders and looking into her eyes.
“Y-yes,” she squeaked, unable to breathe under his stare. “Thank you.”
“Good, I’m glad. If you’ll excuse me.” He let her go and stalked off into the bushes and grabbed Adam up by his collar and dragged him into the woods. After a lengthy few minutes, Roger came back out, Adam nowhere in sight.
“Uh, you didn’t kill him did you?” Melanie asked, peering around him into the trees.
“No,” Roger chuckled. “I gave him a good talking to and told him not to bother you ever again. I don’t think you’ll have any more trouble with him.” He beamed down at Melanie which made her smile.
