Legion Incorporated
an excerpt

“You killed a guy?!” Rabia slapped her hands on either side of me on the desk. I jumped and looked up at her.
“It was an accident,” I croaked. I hadn’t attempted speaking yet this morning. I groaned at how awful my voice sounded.
“But you killed him?” She persisted. Jakob stepped off the elevator and walked over to us.
“Yes,” I said, and dropped my head onto the desk.
“Good mornin’,” Lori said, glaring at Rabia. Rabia ignored her.
“Good morning, Lori,” Jakob said. “You look lovely today.” Lori was wearing a shade of pink that made me want to hurl.
“Why thank you kindly, Jakob,” she beamed. “That’s very sweet of you to say.” She turned back to whatever the Hell it was she was doing. Sorting outgoing mail or something, I wasn’t paying attention.
“I can’t believe it! You killed him!” Rabia shouted, a gleeful smile on her face. A few demons glanced over at me on their way into the office.
“It was an accident!” I said to them. “I fell on him. I didn’t murder him, you fucking rubberneckers.”
“You fell on him?” Rabia asked. “That’s even better! Accidental deaths are hilarious!” I looked up at her in astonishment. Lori interjected before I could speak.
“We have work to do,” she said, dropping a pile of papers in front of me. I laid my head down on them like they were a pillow. “If you don’t mind.”
“Oh, yes,” Rabia sneered. “I’d hate to interfere with such challenging and important work.” Lori glared at her as Jakob steered Rabia out of the lobby and into the office.
“Go ahead, Lori,” I said, I didn’t even have to look to know she was staring at me. “Ask me.”
“What was she talkin’ about?” Lori sounded scared out of her mind. “Did you- did you really kill somebody?”
“I died too early, or something,” I said, leaning back and rubbing my eyes. “Balberith told me I was five minutes ahead of schedule. Remember that guy that was on the elevator with me?” Lori nodded, her eyes were the size of dinner plates. “When I fell, I landed on him. If I hadn’t fallen early, he wouldn’t have been there. It was an accident.” Lori nodded, she was chewing on her lip as if trying to figure me out. The elevator doors opened again, and Sabnock stepped out. He strode over to the desk, the sound of his hooves clomping against the marble floor echoed through the lobby.
“Good morning, ladies,” he said, nodding to me before fixing his eyes on Lori. “Everything’s going well, I trust.”
“Yes, its going fi-” I tried, but he ignored me and kept speaking to Lori.
“How did Aubrey’s first day go, Lori?”
“Aubrey’s first day went just swimmingly,” I said, as brightly as I could.
“She’s doin’ just fine, sir,” Lori said, she set her hand on the back of my chair and smiled at Sabnock.
“Good, good,” he smiled broadly, flashing his deadly-looking teeth. “Perhaps you could meet me in my office this morning, to discuss your new position.”
“Oh come on,” I muttered, rolling my eyes.
“Of course, sir!” Lori nodded, still smiling as Sabnock looked her over one last time before turning towards the doors.
“I bet he’s got quite a few new positions in mind,” I said as soon as the doors closed behind him. “That guy’s a fucking scumbag.”
“Aubrey!” Lori gasped. “He’s your boss! You’d do well not to suggest such things about him.”
“Are you really this stupid?” I stared at Lori in disbelief.
