Brief Author Bio:

I've been participating in Nanowrimo since 2006, but I've been writing off and on since middle school when I wrote a story about a black panther for an English assignment.

I'm married with two grown kids and a new grandbaby (I'm too young for this!).

I'm trying to find out about my family heritage...mainly my American Indian heritage...and am hoping to become an official member of the Cherokee Nation some day. I also have some northeastern Indian in me, but I don't know which tribe.

This heritage of mine explains my interest in writing about American Indian characters. I'm currently in the process of planning, writing or re-writing several novels, all of which have American Indian main characters.

Synopsis: From the Ashes

When Mi'kmaq, Zane Greywolf, was only fourteen, going on fifteen, his older brother, Xander, went off to join the military. A short time later, Zane and his father learned that Xander was killed in action.

For the next fifteen years, Zane tries to keep other people out of his heart. Xander hurt him badly when he left and Zane doesn't want to go through that again.

Imagine Zane's shock when he learns that Xander is alive! Zane is angry with Xander for not letting him know that he was alive and he tries to keep his older brother at bay.

Then a white man and his mixed breed daughter move into the area and build a cabin on Eagle Mountain, sacred land to the Mi'kmaq people. Zane's life will never be the same again.

As Xander tries to convince Zane to give him a second chance, their father is suffering from heart disease. He suffers two small strokes, then has a massive heart attack and dies. It's not until then that Zane and Xander finally begin to work things out.

Zane also begins to fall in love with Anna, the young mixed breed woman, but she is very different from previous women he has dated. She is good and kind and very inexperienced in the ways of love. He feels he is not good enough for her, but she convinces him to give their relationship a chance.

Blizzards blanket the land, making life difficult for the people living at the foot of Eagle Mountain. Zane and Xander face unexpected dangers, and find they must make peace with their past before they can move forward.

Will Zane make the ultimate sacrifice for the brother who abandoned him years ago, or will he, in turn, abandon Xander in his darkest hour?

Excerpt: From the Ashes

Xander ran to Zane and covered him with his own body while Lucas aimed and fired at the remaining gunman.

The whip came down across Xander's back, but it barely did any damage, as Perez was distracted by the shooting. He pulled a gun out of a holster under his left arm and aimed it at Xander.

“Move or you're dead,” he spat.

“No,” Xander said quietly, meeting the man's gaze.

“Move!” Perez yelled, cocking his gun.

Xander shook his head.

“No.”

Perez's hand began to shake, but he didn't lower his gun. His plan had fallen apart and he was suddenly afraid.

Lucas rushed him, tackling him to the ground and knocking the gun several feet away.

Xander turned and began to free Zane of the leather straps holding him up against the tree.

“C'mon, let's get you out of harm's way,” he said gently.

Zane was too weak to protest and Xander had to carry him . He sat his brother by a tree and turned to look back.

Lucas and Perez were struggling over a gun- Perez's, by his guess.

He looked back at Zane and saw that his brother was struggling to stand up. He went back and helped him to his feet, then turned to watch the fight between Lucas and Perez.

Lucas managed to wrangle the gun away. He stood and tossed the gun to Xander.

In that brief moment, Xander saw Perez reach for Lucas' gun, which he'd neatly tucked in the back waist of his jeans. He saw Perez' hand close around the handle and deftly pull it out. He cocked it and pulled the trigger.

Xander didn't think of what the consequences might be when he reacted. All he thought about was saving Zane's life. He jumped in front of his brother and the first bullet hit him in the chest, flinging him backward into Zane. Before they hit the ground, two more bullets hit him. One hit him in the shoulder and one hit him in the side.

He heard several more shots in the next few seconds. Things seemed to slow down as he and Zane flew backward onto the ground. Xander heard his brother grunt as he hit the ground. He felt the searing pain in his chest, shoulder and side.

“Zane?” he cried out. “Zane?”

His voice sounded distant to his ears.

He saw Zane's face above him as his brother struggled to pull him close. He tried to reach up to touch Zane's face as it hovered above him, but his arm wouldn't work.

“Zane, are you...? Will you...?”

“I'll live,” Zane said as tears streamed down his face. “You saved my life, Xander. But why? Why'd you do it?”

“I had to. I couldn't lose you....”

“But...” Zane started, but couldn't continue as he choked back emotions he hadn't felt in a long time.

“I know...” Xander whispered hoarsely. “I know...but all that matters...is that you live...”

“No,” Zane shook his head. “You can't...”

“My life...has been over...for a long time...” Xander said weakly. “Yours is the one...that matters.”

“Don't say that. You matter,” Zane murmured. “Hang in there!”

“I'll try...but I...can't...feel...” Xander murmured. His voice trailed off as he fell unconscious.
