Silver Halide
an excerpt

Febuarary 1 1990

Georgia sat on the carport, cradeling a bottle of whiskey between her legs. Precipitate was falling- hail and rain. She watched the cars go down Central, the main drag. Stars, their headlights grew and shrunk, shrinking until all was dark again- besides the street lights, the house lights and the haze of fog over Seattle. When that happened, she would watch the trees sway back and forth, whisteling and leaves whipping. She pulled her cardigan on tightly and took a swig from the bottle. She turned back to the street and waited for another car. The lights came and faded, not pulling over onto D'accord. She shook her head and took another swig. She leaned back and looked at the stars. Satellites and air planes cluttered her veiw. The sky was never dark- never black- tonight it was maroon. She lay down over the side of the roof and hummed "Baby got back." Nothing was falling from the sky to wish on, except for airplanes, planned, methodical and boring as shit. George had never been on an airplane. She didn't want to. Suzie Ruth always looked to them and said "somebody is going home." That made her want to vomit. How could Mike stand it, all the time, being with that chagrin bitch. Maybe he had whiskey. She pushed they idea out of her mind that she was not the only one and took another swig.
She heard honking coming from central and so she lifted her head. There were red lights in the air. Shit, she thought. Shit shit shit. She pulled herself up with one hand, holding Jack Daniel's in the other. She stood on the peak of the tile roof. The structure swayed beneath her feet. She was just high enough to see a hooker get pulled into a police car. George laughed and sat down with her drink between her legs. One of these days, it'll be her. she thought. Glee- pink- warming her face with the whisky at the thought of Suzie in a short skirt, or better yet, being pulled away by the po pos.
Gearge shivered and pulled Nick's wholy gray sweater tightly over her shoulders. She sipped at the whisky and then waited and waited. Hail started whipping through the air, small glass like specs of ice. She shook her head and a wave of nausea passed through her. She gripped the bottom of the rough.
Car lights hit her face next. She grinned, keeping her teeth closed. She pulled off Nicks sweated and put it over the Jack Daniel's. He would want it. She clutched it close to her chest and hopped off the carport and onto the gravel driveway. She set Nick's cardigan in the bushes and ran to the car. It vibrated with the bass of "deja vu". George tried to stop herself from shaking and look coy. She was wearing a pink T shirt which clung to her goose bumped skin awkardly. "Hey." She said.
Nick raised his eyebrows. "Hey."
