He was late.
That was often the way with the diplomatic couriers. You’d get a warning message, usually by ether, to expect them, days in advance; you’d race like a hellfire demon to your appointed meeting place; and then you’d wait. They never told you what method the precious diplomat would be using to arrive: ship, hoof, foot? Transport magic? Even reincarnation into the appropriate body, I heard of that one once, though I never did find out if the escort was supposed to hang around and wait until the courier grew up.
Silly story. Probably wasn’t true.
