Excerpt: Leave Me And The Plants Die

I watched them for a while. Timing is everything and I had to make sure mine was exact. So I watched them, their perfect bodies riding together. On closer inspection they are of course less than perfect, but in the throes of ecstasy everyone looks better. Even if the closed eyes and heavenly smiles only hide a mind thinking about someone else. Not these two. To them there is no one else. I was torn between jealousy and gladness. A deep part of me longs to be noticed but their ignorance makes this whole process much easier.
They finished. Not the high cries of an animal fuck but the soft contented moans of making love. Such an important distinction. In another life my heart might have broken for these pure and innocent specimens, but not now.
He brushed gentle kisses over her neck and breasts as she lay back, glowing and satiated. He went to the bathroom to pee and she drifted into sleep, her chest rising and falling beneath a tangle of bed sheets. He returned and lay next to her, stroking a hand over her face and pushing her hair away from her eyes.
I slipped out of the shadows then and caught him from behind. I grasped his chin in my hand and hauled him to his feet. I wrenched his head round and heard his neck crack. I jabbed my knee up into his kidney and he crumpled to the floor. At his startled cry the lady stirred but did not wake. I aimed a kick at his head and there was a sickening crunch as my steel toe cap connected with his temple. I was kneeling to check his breathing when I heard her scream. She scrambled over the bed towards me, her face contorted into a snarl of hate and malice. My instinctual backhand sent her flying backwards and over on to the floor. Stupid girl. What did she think she was going to achieve? She wasn’t meant to get caught up this. She wasn’t meant to get hurt. That’s not what I came here to do. In a moment of weakness I had to check she wasn’t broken. That’s when he got me. I don’t know how he got up but he did. He lunged his bulk at me and landed his blow. Fortunately the momentum of his swing coupled with his exhaustion and previous injuries left him off balance. A strong fist to his stomach doubled him over and in the same movement I smashed my elbow into his face. His nose was shattered and pushed into his head and he went down. Blood bubbled in his nostrils and I watched as life fled him.
