an excerpt

Tash leaned his head back and closed his green eyes, accepting the rain falling on his face as a blessing. A choking sound and the splash of something that was obviously not rain hitting his face startled the Summoner in training from his too brief rest. He opened his eyes and gaped at what stood above him.

The Great Master of Water was on his knees, a long blade sticking out of his robed chest. Blood ran in rivulets from the wound and from his open mouth. Tash’s eyes followed the blade’s length through the Great Master of Water’s body and out the other side. The blade was connected to a black handle, which was now also dripping with blood. A gloved hand held the handle of the blade, and that gloved hand belonged to a tall dark cloaked figure.

“You should never turn your back on an opponent, Great Master of Water,” the figure said, a sneer in his voice. “And you should have taught your students that closing their eyes is even worse.” He laughed, an evil cackle to Tash’s ears, and yanked the sword back through the Great Master of Water’s chest. The Great Master of Water choked again on his surprise and his blood, and fell forward, his face hitting the grassy field with a dull thump.

Tash sat there on his knees for another three seconds before he grabbed a hold of Pigz in his left hand and jumped to his feet. The Summoner in training scrambled down the muddy hill as best he could and kept running, the dark cloaked figure’s laugh echoing in his head.
