Undying
an excerpt
At one point in time, a vampire named Tobias Keaton had written a story. It was a very long story, and all of it was true. He had managed to turn it into several successful romance novels and had made a great deal of money off of it. This story, as it turns out, was the story of his life. Not only his life, but the lives of seven other people with whom he was closely associated. Starting with his wife, Sera Keaton; to his two in-laws, Seran Lanton and Admona Diamond; to their spouses, Janice Lanton and Allen Diamond; and onward and upward to their bosses and landlords, Shaye and Lawrence Tradewind.
The dynamics of this strange “family” were complicated, but the important thing to understand was this: all but Sera and Admona were vampires.
These vampires were not of the normal types: they were neither dragonchildren nor the unliving, nor the undead, nor even lupine. None belonged in the pages of Dracula. Modern fiction had written about them, to an extent. They drained enough blood to kill with every feeding. They burned in the sunlight. They slept as the dead in the day, it was true, but at night they could sleep as well. And also, with the help of some very special medallions, crafted by the vampires of Morbus Island, they could walk about in the daytime just like anyone else. These medallions also served, in their individual ways, to make humans that bore them immortal.
The six vampires that lived in the Tradewind house all, as a general rule, fed on Sera Keaton (except for Allen, who fed on his wife Admona; and Janice, who constantly sought other sources). Lawrence and Shaye paid for this service; her husband Tobias and her brother Seran got it free.
But recently things had changed in this household that Tobias Keaton had written so thoroughly about. After consulting with their very discreet doctor, he and Sera had determined how to make their relations bear fruit; that is to say, Tobias had finally figured out what he needed to do to get Sera pregnant. Unfortunately, this required removing her medallion of immortality for nine months.
This meant, in essence, that Admona was now the sole source of blood for five vampires of the household. It was a troublesome situation.
