Going back into the kitchen, she realized that their mom made pancakes.
“Well, this is, um…different,” She said to the room at large. Mom never got up just to make breakfast for them. Emily always had to. “What’s the occasion?”
“Can’t a mother cook for her family just for the heck of it?” She asked innocently.
“Nope.” Emily wasn’t known for her subtlety.
“Hmph. Fine, there is a reason. It has to wait until your brother gets in here, though.” That made Emily even more confused and concerned.
What news could they possibly have for her? Something that they want to better her up for, so it couldn’t be good. A new sibling? New neighbor? Maybe nothing new at all. Perhaps her parents were really undercover spies, and wanted Emily and Tristan to carry on their duty someday. Yeah right. She had to snort at that one, which made her dad glance at her somewhat suspiciously.
“I was just thinking about what news you could have for us, and thought that maybe you were spies. I thought it was funny.” See, she could never keep anything from that man!
He looked at her seriously for a moment, then raised his eyebrows and asked, “Spies? Is that the first thing you came up with?”
“The first interesting thing, yes.” This got them both to smile, and Emily figured that it would be something small that she would have to adjust to in the next day or so. This is because she failed to notice the foreboding look behind the fake happiness in her father’s gray eyes.
