The Day Before Tomorrow
an excerpt
And not everything will be distorted. She will remember the party, of course, and a few details. She'll remember the blue of Gracie's dress and how pale the sky was as the sun broke through the clouds that afternoon. She'll remember how her sister was agitated, and perhaps the fact that she needed to do the laundry. But the comment about the necklace will be enlarged, expanded until it makes a good joke, and she'll inflate Cynthia's significance in her mind, turn her into a paragon of everything Claire wanted or ever wanted to be. Maybe Cynthia is smoking cigarettes in her living room now, watching Judge Judy on television and regretting what her life has become. It doesn't matter. All the world's a stage, and the men and women merely players. What happens here may only be a dream.
