Prologue

“Waking in the dawn of grey despair
Your dreams are over and the winter is here
When all that you love is gone
The cold is setting in, it will remain here for so long
For so long...."

“No, no, no, no!” She murmured the denial, holding me in her arms, begging me to come back. “Corren! Do NOT do this to me!! Please, please, talk to me!”

She had cried this hard only once before, but this time the tears seemed to flow even freer. It might as well have been raining for how wet her face was.

Around us, the night was still and cold, but I didn’t feel the bite of frost, and neither did she.

“I’m sorry, Corren. So sorry. I did not mean for this to happen. You have to know that! Please, please, forgive me. Say something. Corren!”

I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t.
