On those rare fall days when the wind blew just so, Annunda could smell the smoke from the village hearths even this far into the forest. It woke a keenness in her, a longing to sit by a merry fire with friends, even as she remembered what the Red Witch used to tell her. “They burn us in fires like those,” she’d said.
Annunda answered the memory with the same response she’d given the Red Witch. But I’m not a witch! Anyway, she’d have a merry fire of her own soon.
Slung over her back were the rabbits she’d caught earlier that day, a half for herself, and another for Raganork who, wolf though he was, seemed less and less inclined to hunt these days.
