Inside the Realm of Possibilities
an excerpt

As my ears changed over, I heard Grey in the other room, whining, begging for information on what was happening. I heard the thud at the door and snarled. I don’t snarl. Okay, I did, but not like the sound my neighbor in New Orleans’ dog had when it cornered a weak person. The dog should have been shot and put out of its misery. Perhaps I did too.

My legs and arms were feeling the brunt of it. Confined in clothing, I saw the jeans split on the seams. I heard the bra’s front clasp tear and unbuckle. It felt like freedom, as my chest changed in order to fit the turning arms. It was bizarre. My hair, I could feel it shorten and blend into the fur that had started to fill out more now that I resembled a very large, very pissed off dog.

And my mind was starting to split, as the animal took the dominant role. I snapped at it to stay down for a minute, to let me understand, and it snapped right back. It was a fight, but my mind won. Barely. It would not last for long. I need to look in the mirror again, but I wasn’t sure I could. I really didn’t have to worry much about seeing over the dresser.

Imagine a wolf the size of a Great Dane but with the girth of a Rottweiler. I was a damn powerful animal. I had dark brown fur everywhere except for a blonde patch on each of ears. It reminded me of a German Shepherd, except for the off colors. The same family, though. My now grey eyes stood out against the fur. They’d been hazel not – I looked at the clock – thirty minutes ago. It was unreal, because I’m a person. I know I am. I pee sitting on the damn cold toilet seat.
