Nobody Ever Died of Laughter
an excerpt
“So we are the first human beings to walk on this ice field?” asked Flynn with a little bit of enthusiasm in his eyes. The horizon was glowing brightly. He could see his breath. “Fine.” Flynn looked around, unconfident about the directions near the North Pole. He was searching for a little compass in his pocket, which was lost in the jungle of little chocolate balls. He finally got it in sight but was unsure how to handle the arrows. “Ali, I know you told me to go east, but… I think I might have gotten mixed up a little bit.” he stuck the compass under Ali’s nose, who got confused for a few seconds. The compass’ arrows were jumping up and down, as if they couldn’t decide where west and south belonged to.
“How is this…” before finishing his sentence, he was already began to unpack his laptop, eager to figure out what has happened. Stopping for a second, looking up at the sky, he said “East is that way” and pointed Flynn into the direction of big and snowy mountains.
“See you in 10 minutes?” receiving no reply, Flynn put on his sunglasses and headed east. Ali couldn’t respond to anything from the outside world until he was finished. Geology was his addiction; Flynn found his own addiction in healing. They both helped the people but in different ways. Geology… just a couple of rocks and freaking cold, how could Ali like this? Although he never understood his friend, he respected his work. Seeing all that blood wasn’t the favourite part of his job either, but it was one thing he could get used to. The view itself was stunning, but he expected a lot more. Flying polar hedgehogs? He didn’t know, but he was hoping he travelled thousands of kilometres for something more. Maybe he was just overlooking the importance of the silence and virginity of this place. All of a sudden, he saw a blue straight line emerging from the sky, behind the big mountains. He wasn’t sure if his eyes were tricking him.
“Have you seen that?” shouted Flynn, looking back at Ali. Ali looked up for a moment, but everything seemed to be just fine. He was searching for signs of the blue line. Rubbing his eyes, he continued the pointless wandering. The snow started cracking under his feet, the wind began catching up. He could hear the pancake ice rolling under his boots when something in the distance caught his attention. It was the most beautiful thing he has ever seen. From behind the mountains, a big transparent ball of energy exploded and expanded itself in shiny circles. It was drawn closer and closer by every second and Flynn started running in the opposite direction. The energy pulse began transforming into a blue shade and caused Flynn to fall heavily onto the ground – that in his case, happened to be sheer ice. What on Earth was that, he asked himself. I definitely wasn’t imagining the blast, and he pushed himself up into a kneeling position. The following sound was something he never wanted to hear. He could hear ice cracking under his feet all over the island. Would moving be a wise action to do? Not moving seemed even more stupid at the moment.
“Ali!” Flynn let out a loud scream.
