Forever Night
an excerpt

Darkness pressed in heavily against my skin. My breath came in hurried gasps. The bright above me flickered and went out, leaving me stranded in a pool of thicker darkness. My heart leapt into my throat, pounding as if it sought a way out of the cage of my chest. I quickened my pace. Panic fluttered frantically as the next light blinked and went out.

I broke out into a run, clutching my small bag of groceries tightly. It was late. Too late for one young woman to be out and about. Fear clenched my throat closed until I could barely breathe, but pushed me to run faster. Home. I had to get home before the safe period was spent.

Then the hunters would come out. And I’d be fair prey.

Another light spluttered and went out. I ran faster, ignoring the stitch in my side. A shadow darted out the corner of my eyes and I swallowed back as scream as I stumbled to a halt. Lights continued to go out, one by one, faster than I could possibly hope to race them. Darkness, pure and unlighted. I stood, trying to hear passed my own heavy breathing. There was nothing there. Nothing but my own frantic imagination.
