Brief Author Bio:

For ten years, out of highschool, JD ran and later owned an automotive repair shop in Seattle. He really didn't like it. In 2007 he decided to leave all of that behind and change horses mid-stream. Now he sells commercial real estate (well he'll actually sell anything because wow what a terrible time to get into real estate).

In 2008 he took up gardening, visited Alaska, became interested in the distillation of fine whiskey (and excited by the new washington state laws to that end) and adopted two tiny puppies, which a year later still haven't settled down.

Most recently he bought and fixed up a 1993 Winnebago Brave to drive across the country (and while he probably won't be home for Nano, you know his word counts are still going to Seattle)

Synopsis: Mortal Justice and Snowy Silence, books two and three of The Mechanics of the Hunt

In Mortal Justice automotive mechanic and erstwhile demon hunter Jerry Dole finds himself implicated in the murder of an old friend, and then thrust into the search for a serial killer targeting other girls who meet her description.

Then in Snowy Silence Dole finds himself unstuck in time when he unwittingly steals away the Sampo from a hostile wizard. He must claw his way back to his own place and time and free the Puget Sound from the icy grasp of a necromancer who is about to step back into the world.

“Are you in yet?” I asked after a while, done arguing for the sake of arguing. At least Elise was trying to do something. “What's the MO?”

Elise tapped away at the keys for a while longer and then sat back in her chair. “Female social worker, mid-twenties, white, dark hair. Killed with a slashing weapon made of cold iron. That's what they never revealed to the media when Harm was killed: the murder weapon.”

That was a little troubling. “Cold iron. Like a Hunter's weapon.”

“Like the scythe Reist manifested,” Elise said. “Or Fait Halcyon, or …”

“Or any number of mundane weapons,” I interrupted her. “The only way to tell for sure would be to actually get near the body, see if the wounds have any residue of the Breakers.”

“Which you know Babylon will do if they begin to suspect that you're complicit in this. And if the residue is there, well, you're the only Hunter on the west coast.”

The math would be pretty simple at that point. Girls and/or girls killed by a Hunter's weapon, plus a Hunter with precious few allies left within Babylon, equals shit creek, no paddle, etc. “Harm wasn't a social worker anymore though,” I said, grasping at straws. “She'd been a school counselor for years.”

“Same with victim number two. Maybe it's a tenuous connection, but they'd both been social workers in the past. Easy for your mysterious benefactor to gin up a believable story involving a serial killer raging at the system.”

“Okay, okay. How long would it take you to sift through city, county and state records, pull out all current and former social workers matching the physical description?”
Elise nodded. “The police will be looking for the killer. If we look for the next victim instead, maybe we can cut them off and take care of it before Babylon gets suspicious.”

“That's the idea.”

“It's a lot of data, Jerry. I'll code up a data miner, but … a day? Less if I can optimize the search algorithms. I'll need caffeine though. Lots of it.”
