Familiar Perspective
an excerpt

Nevermore’s company all ordered another round of drinks keeping the snake behind the bar busy for a short time at least before it too joined them at the table, slithering up into a chair between the cat and the iguana and coiling around for balance.
“Well since he’s going to take his sweet ass time, I’ll start.” Hissed the python.
“Like you have anything to complain about, Yaser.” Said the iguana.
“Oh and you do, Cheche?” Piped in the cat whose name was Fabby.
“Si, I do. My master… he’s like, 97, and in, like, a home and stuff, but he still does the hoo-doo when the staff ain’t lookin’,” Cheche the iguana began to prattle on in his latino accent “And so like I can’t be around because he is no allowed to have pets or anything, so I have to sleep in the hole in the corner of his room, and that’s like really a tight squeeze because I got this big tail,” He said giving his tail a whip crack as he continued, “and I have to, like, wrap it around my body which no work so well because it’s not really bendy and stuff like Fabby’s is,” this was said as he motioned to the cat with his lit cigar, “and like it’s not easy to sleep in there because I’m a lizard and it gets really cold in that hole and I no can move very fast.” he kept at it for an hour or more, barely pausing to catch a decent breath before continuing to speak at the speed of light.
Those around the table listened to the iguana as he went on about the hole he had to sleep in. All agreed that the life of a familiar was not nearly so glorious as the fairy tales would have people believe. All of them faced hardship, all of them had something to complain about, but not a single one of them had a choice or would leave their masters for anything. There were always perks to the job, and those were what kept them around.
