an excerpt
“Brother! Slow down, please?” begged Epian as she hurriedly tried to catch up with Jung as she held the celadon platter. He only started to walk faster, with more strength in his step, leaving Epian farther and farther behind. She tried to catch up, but was losing breath quickly. That was her final attempt.
“Why do you hate other people so much?” Epian yelled after him, causing him to immediately stop midstep. He stood for a short while and looked over his shoulder, down the hallway at his smaller sister. She seemed very exhausted, breathing heavily, and looked as if she was almost in tears. Epian stared down at the platter.
As she looked up, she was met by her brother’s face nearly an inch away from her. He stood close to her and leaned his face towards hers.
“I don’t hate people Epian,” and he put his right hand on her left shoulder, “I just don’t trust them. Sister, I love you, and I love the rest of the family, but you know how I feel.”
He used his other hand to feel up and down the scar on his right cheek. She puffed her cheeks and raised up the platter of celadon a bit before slamming it down onto the ground. Epian quickly pulled herself away from her brother and ran around him, going down the hallway and exiting into another hallway. He was left alone to see the mess that was made around his feet, and sighed.
Jung looked over his shoulder in the direction where his sister ran and shook his head. He kneeled down and started to pool together the pieces of broken celadon into a pile, easier for someone else to clean.
“Sister, I wish you understood,” he commented as he shook his feet clean and opened one of the rice wood doors, “the world isn’t as nice as you think it is.”
