The Anythings
an excerpt
“The Flaming Marshmallows,” Chris drawled, a sound so practiced it was impossible to tell whether or not he was being sarcastic.
“That’s crap, Chris, and you know it,” Holly replied, effectively splitting the difference.
“What’s wrong with it? It’s not like you could come up with anything better.”
“I’m not being in a band called The Flaming Marshmallows,” Lindsay weighed in with a flick of her long blonde hair, in true band tradition of making an argument worse purely for the sake of it.
“Oh yeah?” Chris yelled belligerently, “You come up with a better name, then.”
“Anything!” Lindsay exclaimed, ever the drama queen, and really warming to the argument now. “Anything and everything would be better than the truly tragic suggestions you’ve come up with so far.”
“Actually,” Spence interrupted, his voice claming but his mouth quirking up at the corners in an unmistakably wicked smirk, “that’s not a bad suggestion, Lindz.”
“What isn’t?” Holly asked, half dreading the answer. Spence may have been the peacekeeper of the group, but nine times out of ten he was also the one to come up with their craziest ideas.
“Anything. Or, rather, The Anythings.”
Holly smiled. Of course, she corrected her earlier train of thought, half of the time their craziest ideas were their best ones. “The Anythings,” she repeated thoughtfully. “I like it.”
