Blood Magic
an excerpt

"Bye Chael," Fia said, and left, closing the door behind her.

He took a deep breath, and then staggered towards his sofa, ideas rushing into his mind. "I could hear her," he thought, "I could hear the thoughts, and feel her fear, I could hear her thoughts," he repeated it over and over in his mind, waiting for an explanation, wanting something to show him what was happening to him. And then he realised, and in that terrible moment of realising, everything went cold. The room dropped to an icier atmosphere than it had previously been. Chael starred at the ground in shock, a shiver making its way up his spine.

"Blood Magic."

"Blood Magic."

"Blood Magic."

He thought over and over over, trying out how the words felt on his lips, wondering what they would feel like when he was being killed.

"Blood Magic. My death sentence."

Words were refusing to come to him, thoughts were scrambled in his mind, all focused on those two words. The thoughts, the feelings. Everything that was happening to him. Half an hour passed, yet it felt like a single moment.

And then he remembered what had already happened, Fia. Telekinesis. A salt shaker that should be shattered, a moments mistake. Magic coming to the aid as a reflex, condemning her, revealing her. She has seamed to scared before, so alone.

"She left," Chael thought. "She left, and I need to get to her, even if I do nothing I could tell her. But the fear, everything, I need to find her."

In a split second he had stood up and was grabbing his coat, wondering where he was going, wondering where Fia had gone. He knew she would be going back to her house, and he knew where that was and so he set off walking quickly out of his apartment.

Slowly, like a tale reaching it's climax, he began to run. Not minding what he looked like, or who would see him. "I should have realised sooner, something will happen, her fear, there could not be anything else." His thoughts were focussed on her, his sister, who he had embraced not long ago, his sister who was so scared he could taste it.
