Brief Author Bio:

The thing I love about my favorite writers is when they mix SF/fantasy with banality. Delany and Sterling especially. I love this. Fantasy can be really pompous sometimes - stagey. I love when there is some kind of metaphysical element in the characters' sense of cause-and-effect in a story, but they have to navigate that thing via all of the boredom, misunderstandings, false starts with which we real people have to navigate a combination of amazing things and boring ones. Delany described SF as a wider range of possible sentences that are available. It's way more fun to use the whole entire rainbow, fantastic AND mundane. As Scott McCloud put it (I'm paraphrasing)... "To the Purple Mountains of Quendor! But first....... to the men's room!"

Synopsis:

The bugs are evolving as a result of overprescription of antibiotics. A "good" bug, who just ***likes people a lot and can't help it***, shows up at the doorstep of CDC Director Greg Sanchez offering to help out by intercepting the bad bugs. The good bug's name is Legion. Then Legion and Sanchez get bitter over a love triangle with a very lovely McClatchy reporter named Siobhan O'Leary. As a result of his bitterness, Legion gets careless and accidentally lets one through (or accidentally on purpose because he was pissed off at the human race - it's hard to tell which, and Legion is a bit vague on the subject when you ask him), which spells big trouble for all the people who already live on the planet, but spells a lovely round of Justin Herman-style Redevelopment for the bugs.

Excerpt:

Rush looked ticked off in a very cliched way.
"Wait a minute, dude, I flew, you know, like I have these legs and that's my remedy, my scrunge. That's what I could do anyway and the vaccine unleashed. It wasn't like we took a vacation, it was a quick way to get around. I do travel now."
"Oh," Rush said.
"So wait, like, are you named after Rush Limbaugh?"
"No," Rush said. "I'm actually named after Rush Holt."
"Who?"
"Rush Holt. He's a congressman from New Jersey. He's nothing like Rush Limbaugh at all."
"Oh. Interesting. Anyway, I can now cover large distances in a short time and that's like my thing."
"Oh yeah," Rush said.
"So wait a minute," Carolyn said. "Did you have some ability come out when you took the vaccine?"
"Umm," Rush said. "Yeah, but I - I'll tell you some other time what that is."
"Oh, okay," Carolyn shrugged. "Well, I'm getting antsy. I don't know. I feel like I should be doing something to shut them down. It doesn't seem like really great odds, the way they are constantly expanding to new cities."
She bunched her legs a little on Rush's leg. There were definitely other ways to spend time than being a hero...
