"Faster than the speed of Love" - anyone who gets the reference gets a cookie
an excerpt
The moment he reached the side of the woman he loved the level of lighting in the cave rose so that all could clearly see. She was pretty in a very generic sort of way Dani thought to herself a little grumpily. Her tangled hair and torn gown didn't do her any favours either. There was nothing really that special about her at all. The adoration in Gerard's eyes was indication enough that he saw a vision of far greater beauty than that which she saw however. It was enough to make her take a second look. She had always known that her mild infatuation could lead nowhere. The object of her attraction was already spoken for and they quit literally lived in different worlds. Seeing the way joy infused his face just at the sight of his lady Dani felt the last vestiges of jealousy fade away. At least for the present...
She joined Gerard at Carla's side offering him a smile of encouragement. He returned a rather dazed smile of his own. This close she could see the way his hands trembled, note the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. Now that he had finally found the princess he was supposed to be rescuing it seemed like he didn't have a clue what to do. Considering carefully the amount of noise they had all made Dani concluded that the girl's slumber must be magically induced for surely she would have stirred by now otherwise. Well, that was just fine. This was a story she knew well.
'You need to wake her up, go on.'
'I... How?'
'Kiss her.'
'What! Without her permission?'
'Yes.' Dani rolled her eyes. 'Don't you know anything? A sleeping beauty is only woken when she receives true love's kiss.'
'I couldn't. I mean, she might not want me to. It would be taking advantage of her!'
'Now is not the time to act the gentleman.'
'Her mother... The queen would kill me.'
'Gerard? My Lord, is that you?'
Hearing the princess's voice Gerard forgot both Dani and the discussion in an instant. He feel to his knees beside the waking girl, a single tear escaping unnoticed from his eye as he watched her blink weary, bemused eyes. She smiled the sweetest, most beautiful smile he had ever seen.
'It is me princess. I am here.'
