Or, the Jailor Helps Out
an excerpt
The wedding, at least, was beautiful.
The Great Hall where it was held is magnificent, clad from floor to ceiling in mosaics of mirror, glossy tile and gold. Every surface flat or curved, every column, every arch glints with refracted light. The effect on the whole is as if the entire hall had been shattered in a great cataclysm and then rebuilt, restored to broken glory and more beautiful for all the painstaking care of its reconstruction. Against this backdrop, the people moving through it looked strange almost in their smooth, wholeness. They seemed inhumanly perfect and impervious to harm.
