Excerpt:

Prologue
The limo pulled up to the National Monument, the crowd spread out across the grass like a vast sea of people. The stage had been erected towards the front. Rebecca could see the secret service, FBI, and military personnel stationed around the monument.
“I can’t believe I’m really here.” She breathed as she gazed out of the tinted window.
“I can.” Her husband put his hand on cheek and turned her face towards him. “You are the best person for this job. The American people know that. That’s why you’re here.”
Gazing into his eyes she could almost believe it. She often wondered if he had hypnotizing abilities. Just one look from him and she would believe anything he said. Course maybe it was the fact that she was madly in love with him.
“That’s not saying much. Think of the real winners the American People have chosen in the past.” She knew she was just fishing for another compliment, but she also knew he would give it to her.
“Well everyone makes mistakes. They are repenting of their ways because they chose you.”
It was pure bunk and she knew it, but she loved every word.
“Are you sure you want to go through with this? We can call it off right now.” Her stomach fluttered and part of her wanted him to tell the limo driver to turn around and take them home and forget any of this had ever happened.
“And let your predecessor remain in office? You know what he’s doing to this country, even the American people know now. They would never forgive you for turning your back on them now. You would never forgive yourself.”
She looked down at her hands knowing he was right. She had to do this.
“Look at me.” He tipped her chin up to look her in the eyes. “You can do this. WE can do this together. You are not alone.”
His lips came down on hers and she felt her heart flip like a school girl. He placed his hands on either side of her face and pulled away slightly just enough to look straight into her eyes. Suddenly the world seemed right again.
“Now let’s get out there and go to your inaugural party, Madam President.”
“I’m not the president yet.” She reminded him.
“Well let’s fix that. Besides, I’m looking forward to making love to the President of the United States.”
“Is that all you can think about?”
“We all need goals.” His rakish smile about melted her bones.
She smiled into his hazel eyes contrasted by the dark color of his skin. His hair was cropped close to his head, she loved when he shaved it all off, but he had grown it out for her campaign. That is how she will always remember him. Their last kiss, their last conversation, their last moment. After leaving the limo and going onto the stage, her world had been thrown into chaos. The bullet was meant for her, she knew that, he knew it too. He’d stepped in front of her, saving her life and ruining it all at the same time. He was gone.
