“Esario etie.” she whispered pleadingly. After a moment, her eyes glazed over, and the air around them gradually charged with electricity. Sparks began crackling around them. Dominick glanced around nervously, then his mind began to swim, his thoughts swirling together into a cloud. With a great effort, he reached up, grabbed the girl's hand, and pushed it away, throwing her to the other side of the pod. Drained of energy, he collapsed to the ground.
“Ow!” she hollered. “That hurt.”
Dominick was still for a moment letting his mind clear, and then sat back up. “So,” he gasped, “I guess you can speak my language.” He put a hand to his temple as everything around him began to spin. “Ooh.”
“What?” she countered, rubbing her shoulder, which she had landed on. “No I can—“ She frowned. “Huh. I didn't think so.” She scratched her head. “Apparently I can.”
He looked up at her with a raised eyebrow. “You didn't know?”
“Well,” she answered, gradually putting her thoughts together. “I certainly didn't think I could. I was pretty sure I couldn't. But now I do. So, I guess that means I could, but if I could have, you would think I would have.”
“What?”
“I have no idea.”
“Uh...okay.” He tentatively rose to a crouch, and then stood up. “So, what was that?”
“What was what?”
“That thing you did?”
“What do you mean? I just put my hand on your shoulder and asked you to help me.”
“No, after that.”
“You threw me.”
Nick shook his head and became dizzy again. “No,” he said “before that.” He motioned with a hand in an arbitrary direction.
“I told you,” she said, quite confused, “I put my hand on your shoulder and—”
“No,” he interrupted. “The bit with the sparks and the spinning and the making me dizzy.”
She frowned again. “I don't remember anything like that. Are you sure you do?”
Dominick stared at her. “You really don't remember that.”
“Nope!” she grinned.
