Poisoned Rationality
an excerpt
Korf was pacing about his room again in the silence. Trying to think of something to do to help his sister. There was nothing that he could do without giving her away so far. He and Talif had run through about a thousand different scenarios on things they could do but they all ended up with having to have Kiera reveal her location and that would leave her open. Talif had to do his duty as a guard so he could not help Korf any at the moment.
In his pacing he did not see the figure appear in his mirror. Spiri watched him pace for a bit before she started trying to get his attention. She tried just waving her arms at first. But since he wasn’t looking it didn’t help much. She crossed her arms for a moment as she thought about how to get his attention. If he didn’t look at her she couldn’t talk to him. She decided to try something else and started tapping at the glass. When that didn’t work she tried knocking.
He looked up at least, but he looked at the door instead of the mirror. He even went over and opened the door but since there was no one there he was just slightly confused. She tried knocking again and at least got him to look around. So she started waving her arms again hoping he would see her. It didn’t work at all and she sighed out of faint frustration.
“For the love of all that is dead is he blind?” She said to herself
He closed the door and went back to pacing making her huff. She crossed her arms again and watched him thinking.
“Let’s see…what will get the attention of Mr. oblivious,” She said thinking aloud.
He kept pacing and she watched him still. Then she smiled slightly as she figured out what she could do. She took a deep breath and then let out an ear piercing glass cracking high pitched whistle. It sure worked because the mirror cracked slightly and he winced. She waved when he looked over at the mirror in slight disbelief. Since he still couldn’t technically hear her she had to get him to say something that would let him hear her. So she wrote on the mirror what she needed him to say. Of course she was really good at writing backwards so he could read it.
Korf looked at the cracked mirror in disbelief and amazement. Watched the odd girl in the mirror writing something as he walked over closer to his full length mirror. She gestured to what she had written when she was done. When he only raised an eyebrow she sighed and pointed to what she had written again and mimicked talking. He knew what she wanted him to do but wasn’t sure he should. He didn’t know this creature at all and was reluctant to do anything to assist her. But then he thought maybe there was a connection between her and Kiera as the other strange girl that had suddenly popped up had been connected. So he read what had been written.
“The five elements hear my request let my ears hear what can not be heard through the mirror,” he said
Spiri smiled.
“Finally,” she said
He paused, because he had heard her speak and that was unusual.
“Who are you?” he asked
She did a little bow as the mirror seemed to reseal itself.
“I am Spiri, Dragon Sprite and spirit guide to the Dark Fire witch,” She said, “and I have come to deliver a message to the Prince from the lost one.”
Korf raised an eyebrow again but it only took him a moment to understand what she said.
“What proof do I have that you come from the lost one?” He asked.
“She has told me something. Something that only you and the lost one would know,” She said
“And what is it that she has told you?” he asked
“Hard times will harden it, anger and hate will blacken it, and loss will break it. But true love will restore it to perfect beauty,” Spiri said softly.
Korf looked at her quietly for a moment.
“A heart… that was something from our mother...,” he said
Spiri waited silently because she could tell it hit a spot that hurt and would always hurt.
“What is this message?” he asked
“Both the lost one and the Dark fire witch wish to speak with you. I am here to show you how you can. If you are willing,” she said
He nodded.
“Show me,” he said
