All Sorts Of Complicated
an excerpt
Jen headed towards the most crowded part of the room and Sarah sighed. Of course Josh had to be in the biggest group of people, making it almost impossible to get trough to him. She stopped a couple of steps from the group, Jen having come to a halt right in front of her. They looked at each other and Sarah shrugged. If Jen wanted to talk to Josh so badly, she was the one who had to get through the mass of people.
Before they could discuss what to do however, a person passed by between them and the crowd. He seemed to not look all that intently at where he was putting his feet and subsequently stepped on Sarah’s foot.
“Shit,” she cursed, as the pain hit her.
About to start screaming and clutching her foot, she realized that the guy hadn’t even noticed and was continuing on his way. Before she could think about whether it was smart or not, she kicked him. With her already injured foot. They both let out a yelp of pain at the same time and he turned around to glare at her, rubbing his leg and looking at her wiggling her foot around.
“What the hell are you doing?” he asked.
“You stepped on my foot!” Sarah responded, glaring back at him.
“And you kicked me!”
“I kicked you because you stepped on my foot! I’ve probably broken my toes!”
“What’s wrong with just telling me so? You didn’t have to permanently cripple me.”
“And you should watch were you’re going. You weren’t even going to apologize!”
Sarah was almost screaming by now. They had to talk loudly because of the music filling the room, but the more they said, the more their voices rose.
“Maybe I would have apologized if you had given me a chance!” he said.
“You didn’t even notice! You were probably too busy looking at her breasts,” Sarah said, gesturing at a somewhat bemused Jen.
The guy let his gaze slip over Jen and gave her a wry grin. Then he looked back at Sarah and the grin disappeared.
“Why would I notice you when there’s someone like her nearby?” he said, obviously trying to hit a nerve.
“Because the fact that you’re a mindless pervert doesn’t mean that you get to act like a complete jackass to everyone that doesn’t meet your standards,” Sarah said.
“Jealous?”
“Hardly,” she said, snorting. “Why would I be jealous over the fact that she’s unfortunate enough to attract morons like you?”
“Because you couldn’t attract a dung-beetle?”
“A dung-beetle would be preferable over a blinkered wanker like you.”
“And a burning train-wreck is more attractive than you.”
Sarah opened her mouth to shoot another insult his way, but Jen stopped her by grabbing a hold of her arm and pulling her back.
“What are you doing?” she hissed. “Do you always have to find someone to fight with?”
“Hey, he was the one who started it!”
“No, it wasn’t!” the guy broke in. “You kicked me!”
“And you stepped on my foot!”
“Shut up!” Jen almost screamed, before they could start all over again. “Sarah, just apologize to him.”
“What? Why me?”
“Because it’s always your fault.”
