Jane Clarke knew she should have been listening. But there was pain. It was all she could think about it. And there was so much noise in her ears. She blinked, but couldn’t see anything. Jane tried to take a breath.
“Jane, are you listening to me?” she was asked again. She shook her head, she just wanted darkness to engulf her. “No, Jane! Listen to me!”
“I can’t...it hurts,” Jane croaked.
“I know, honey.” Why couldn’t she see this person? Finally the pain began to subside and the dark she was longing for came. “Jane!” was the last thing she heard.
