Excerpt: Umbre

“I have an active imagination to make up for my lack of adventure.”
“Maybe you should get a cat.”
Carrie gave Gavin an uncomprehending look. “A cat?”
“Then you wouldn’t feel alone, and your imagination would have less of an opportunity to run wild.”
“I’m only going to be here for two weeks.”
“Are we really going to discuss this again Carrie?” Carrie did not answer but pouted out her lower lip defiantly. Gavin shook his head. “How about a cat on loan? The island has a few strays. You could adopt one of them for two weeks and then turn it back outside.”
“I’m not the kind of person that can do that. I get attached.”
“Well, you could stay.”
“Or I could take it back with me on the plane.”
“Yes, or that.”
“It better be damned cute.”
“I thought women think all small fuzzy animals are cute.”
“Not if they have mange.”
“Fair enough.”
