The Family Man
an excerpt

"Don't you understand? You don't get it do you," she laughed, exasperated, and yet her laugh was tremulous, slightly hysterical, and she knew she was close to breaking. "It's not just coincidence. It can't be! There can't be that many coincidences in that short of time. Look at the odds. Just look at the odds, Trevor! That many people dying in those circumstances? You can't think its just some anomaly. You can't! Do you, can you, believe me now?" Her eyes met his, wide eyed and frenzied. She wasn't mad, he knew that. She just made too much sense to be crazy. He had thought for a while she was perhaps a paranoid delusional and had requested that she be tested. She had passed the tests with flying colors however. Which left her theories. Her awful, horrifying theories. What were the odds? He didn't know. He needed to think. He needed to figure this all out.
Running a hand through his dark hair, he looked over at her, disbelief slowly fading in the the harsh lights. He shook his head. He just didn't want to believe this could happen.
"Please..." She whispered to him, her hands coming across the table, chains clinking softly as she moved. "You see it now. You see the pattern. Why can't you accept it? People get away with things every day. There are murderers throughout the world that have never been caught under the eye of suspicion. So many get away with it, why isn't it possible for this? Do you know how long it took me to find this information? To put it together? How long I have lived here day after day in this hellhole, waiting for him to come after me? Find me and know that he can snuff me out too, just like all the rest? I know it sounds crazy. Hell, it IS crazy. I can't hardly believe it myself. Please Trevor. Please, just investigate. If something doesn't click, if my information is bad, if I'm wrong, fine. I can handle that. I'd rather be wrong. I would almost rather stay here the rest of my life, than be right. Almost. But what if I am not? What if all this time, he's been out there, preying on the innocent, waiting in the darkness for the right people, the right circumstance, dammit, people like I was. Innocent, trusting people who didn't deserve..." She sobbed and the tears that glimmered in her eyes, hanging there like drops of rain, leaked from the corners of her eyes, as she stared at him with despair.
She knew without a doubt she was right. She knew. He wasn't even sure why he was doubting her. Mainly because if he believed her, if he believed the horrific idea that for years this had been going on and no one suspected a thing, then he had to live with the fact that he had not believed in her innocence the first time around. He had helped put her in this hellhole of a jail in the first place. He had put all of that despair into her heart and filled her with fear, loneliness, rage and betrayal. He would and should pay for that the rest of his days. If everything she had surmised was true, he deserved to burn just as much as the killer who had put her here.
