True to the Spirit
an excerpt

The Egyptian sun was slowly rising as two young men huffed under the scrappy tent. While still early in the morning, the temperature was already beginning to rise, and the two men were already breaking out in a sweat. Surrounding them were half unburied ruins of something - the two men were unsure exactly what they were digging up at this point in time. They hoards of additional workers had left the week before, when preliminary digging and bore nothing fruitful except for the hieroglyphic walls. Peter and Jacob stayed behind to work on translating the glyphs, as well as look for anything else of interest.
Jacob paused for a second, wiping sand and dusk off his face with his damp, already dusty cloth. He gazed around for a moment, then watched his colleague, who was steadily digging up dirt with an odd determination.
“I don‘t know what else we‘re supposed to find here.” Jacob said doubtfully. He raised an eyebrow as Peter straightened his back and leaned on his shovel.
“I don‘t know, something,” Peter said, “There has to be something here, everything we‘ve managed to translate off the walls points to someone or something be buried here. Something that was buried with less-than-formal rites, something that was left here, of all places, because of something they did.”
“The Beast-Man.” Jacob stated flatly. Peter only nodded and got back to digging. Jacob sighed, and joined in.
Peter seemed to be in denial, but Jacob knew why they were left to finish researching the site. It was a wild goose chase. Something harmless to keep the two new guys busy. That’s all. They weren’t supposed to find anything here - they were just supposed to translate stuff, then continue on to their next assignment.
Besides, no one ever finds anything interesting on their first dig.
