The bureaucrats mentioned this to their bosses, who pushed it on up until it was being discussed secretly by the cabinet. Everyone agreed – it was a dreadful unfairness, but how to gain redress? Finally the Department of Defense issued their orders and troops throughout barracks in Belarus climbed into their field gear and embarked into Armored Personnel Carriers. They were going on a field trip – a simple training exercise that would see them guarding the Druzhba pipeline as if protecting it from terrorists. All along the metal snake writhing through the countryside, teams of armed men stationed themselves – carrying out regular patrols along the length of the pipe in their area.

It took Russia only days to notice.
