Excerpt: The Angel in the Fountain or Brian's Fall (Uncertain)
Kinsy sat with Lincoln outside of the emergency room. Both of them had remained speechless the entire way to the hospital. Even if they'd had something to say, their tears would have kept them from being understood (understandable? Strike the sentence maybe?) Lincoln sat with his face pressed firmly into the palms of his hands, numb to the world. All he could see was Brian's fall from the top of the fountain, all he could hear was the thud of Brian's head against the marble ledge halfway down and the splash of his body in the shallow pool of water. Kinsy hadn't seen the actual fall and felt a tiny amount of relief that she hadn't. She wasn't sure if she would ever ask Lincoln exactly what had happened, or if he would at some point feel the need to tell her of his own accord. For the time being, however, the two remained silent, Lincoln with his face hidden in his hands and Kinsy with an arm around his back and her head on his shoulder, motionless. This was their first taste of powerlessness, and it was far more bitter than they could have described to anyone.
