Excerpt: Ùghdair
Rae bit the eraser on the back of her pencil in frustration. The dark scrawled words across the lined page stared back at her. “AH!” She crumpled it into a ball and threw it hard at the wall, it bounced lightly off it.
How do published authors manage to get their ideas focused into a cohesive storyline on paper? How do they even start? She’d tried again to put down this amazing epic sci-fi idea she had onto paper but, like every time prior, it seemed flat and uninteresting when changed from brain wave to alphabet.
She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. At least it was quiet in the house right now. The ‘rents Mom and the sibs were out walking the dog; Matt was at work. It could only last so long now though. Scooching over to the end of the bed, she leaned over and flipped open her laptop on the desk. As the screen powered up, she tapped her pencil against the surface of the desk.
Maybe she should try something different, a storyline that she didn’t feel so attached to. Something randomish that she could mess around with and change as she wrote without feeling like she was betraying her characters.
She double clicked on the Windows Media Player icon before opening her word processer. Moments later, the haunting strains of a Celtic wind instrument swirled in the air around her. This time, her sigh was one of determination and deep thought. Images of a emerald green forest danced in her mind’s eye. Yes, that is the setting I am looking for, my main character can be a wood elf sort of or something along those lines but what will she be doing?
Rae thought back to the dream she had had the night before. Hmmm. . . that could work. She set the pencil behind her ear and rested the her fingers on the keyboard. The hint of a smile pulled at the one corner of her mouth.
What if?
